About Harrison

I'm a forever DM of 15 years who is lucky enough to work full-time in the TTRPG Industry. My table is patient and inclusive, whilst my games are roleplay heavy with tactical and crunchy combat. My games are optimised for and delivered exclusively via Foundry VTT. I typically enjoy maintaining 1 or 2 prolonged campaigns, whilst filling in the gaps with frequent one-shot adventures or shorter arcs. As a DM new to StartPlaying, I intend to initially offer one-shot adventures at a lower price to familiarise myself with the platform before settling into ongoing campaigns.

I became a GM because

- I get more enjoyment out of creating moments for a group to shine and have fun, than I do taking those moments myself as a player. - I get to do more voices!

My favorite books are

- Terry Pratchett (particularly Small Gods, Reaper Man, Thief of Time, and Mort) - Lord of the Rings - His Dark Materials Narrative videogames have also shaped a huge amount of my storytelling flavour : - Legacy of Kain - Baldur's Gate (particularly 2) - Final Fantasy (especially 8 and 10)

When I'm not running games I'm...

- Managing a team of 16 battle map artists for The MAD Network - Being a father of three and a husband. - Expanding on my ongoing weekly campaign set in Amn. - Walking my Rhodesian Ridgeback. - Thinking what game to run next!

How Harrison runs games

Depending on the dynamics and interests of the group, I tend to run heavy RP sessions, which also include realistic, tactical combat. An entire campaign session may be dedicated to conversation if that's what the players want to do. My combat is intelligent and tactical, without being cruel - Predators will ambush and try to drag away smaller or weaker players, not mysteriously focusing on the tank-built characters. Sentient enemies will communicate, flee, and adapt. They will make additional attacks at downed characters instead of changing focus for no reason. Likewise - they will break with fear if the tables turn, and have their own wants and motivation for being in combat. I work with my players to involve their back stories and interests throughout the world. We're here to facilitate a story together - we're not here to force you through the experience I originally had in mind.

I once ran a session...

in my Curse of Strahd campaign that spanned 4 full sessions of dinner with an NPC the group had been pursuing for some time. The players loved it, and still had questions at the end. Eventually, we realised that particular in-game day had spanned 32 IRL hours. Playing at 0.75x listen speed!

Rules are...

An important structure system for our games, but not perfect - especially with the newer 2024 edition. Sometimes we may make our own interpretations at the table - it is my job to record and refer back to those rulings so your experience at my table is consistent and doesn't feel ruled on a whim.

When it comes to voices

I will always do character voices for the NPCs and individuals in my game, as it helps with immersion and also helps me keep individual characters separated in my mind. If you are a player comfortable with voices - great! If you're not, that's also fine and you won't be pressured to do so here.

Harrison's ideal table

My ideal table is relaxed, comfortable players who are happy joking with each other and creating social bonds, but are serious about the time commitment we've made to play the game together.

I am for a vibe that's...

appropriate to the game being played. Groot and Rocket are not going to be a good fit for a serious Curse of Strahd campaign, just like a goofball, Saturday morning cartoon vibe Spelljammer adventure isn't the best fit for a troubled and brooding Alucard from Castlevania.

I love it when a player

brings a character to the table, not a build. It is much easier for us to make a character powerful over the course of an adventure, than it is to bring character to a build you're aiming towards. A character can handle tough times. If a build doesn't work in an encounter it's hard to not feel bad

My table is not the place for...

harassment, intolerance, or harmful stereotypes. However, it is also not a table that welcomes performative outrage, or a lack of accountability for personal responsibility. Let's play games together with non-problematic attitudes and behaviours, whilst respecting the time of all at the table.
