My favorite shows/movies are

Buffy - The GOAT. Star Trek: Enterprise - Captain Archer deserves more love. Futurama - My all time most watched show. I used to only be able to fall asleep if Futurama was playing in the background.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Gardening! As that is what I do by trade but when I am not in the garden I am with my wonderful children

How Matt - The Grimy Goblin GM runs games

As a DM I focus on character, story, inclusive gameplay and EPIC moments! I would describe my style as a 60/40 RP/Combat split. I like to encourage and facilitate players to roleplay at any given moment but also enjoy big, chunky and cinematic combat encounters. I always work to make sure that your character is central to the story, building your backstory into the narrative and giving you secrets to motivate your character further down the path of adventure! My games are inclusive and tolerant. Bigotry is rewarded with banning. Disputes are resolved with adult conversation. I use an X card system and a session zero to establish boundaries and lines that everyone feels comfortable.

Matt - The Grimy Goblin GM's ideal table

My table is a mixture of tom-foolery and hi-jinks mixed with tense dramatic moments and the occasional emotional gut punch. I like to keep things light and fun, the parties that I run for tend to be found families and rag-tag groups of lovable misfits. But this light heartedness and humour does not take away from the drama and emotions of serious themes and plot points. I try to work with my players to develop and create emotional pay offs throughout a campaign, engaging with their backstory, secrets and relationships that are built into the world.

I love it when a player

leaves open questions in their backstory. If you write a backstory with all the details filled in, there is nothing to discover along the way. Writing a backstory with open mysteries that you don't know the answer to allows the GM to take it and run.

I think min/maxing...

is not necessary. If you are into it, that's cool, we can make space for that. But I prioritize story and motivation over all else when making characters and adventures.
