About Jill

Hello! My name is Jill and I am a Game Master, cosplayer, actual play performer, and voice actor! I've been running games for 4 years now and wouldn't want to be doing anything else. I've had a passion for telling stories and creating fantastical worlds my whole life, which naturally has extended to my love of TTRPGs. You can see examples of my work as an actual play cast member listed at ghostiejk.carrd.co !! The stories I like to tell have a focus on narrative elements rather than mechanics. If you love theater-of-the-mind, then I'm your gal! I tend to like a balance of rule-of-cool and rules lawyering, but the main focus should always be the story: if the mechanics get in the way or bog it down, I'm overruling it! I take safety very seriously at my tables. I will ask each participant to fill out some information anonymously ahead of time so we know which topics to avoid or tread carefully around. I *love* intense stories as much as the next person, so we need to know the boundaries we can play within!

My 3 systems I'd bring to a desert island would be

Ironsworn, Wickedness, and FATE!

My favorite books are

I love Ray Bradbury novels, LOTR (of course). Recently, I'm trying to read more fantasy and horror. I'm currently reading Jade City and Dark Sisters is next in my list.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Writing, making art, playing video games, and spending time with my 5 pets đŸ¶

How Jill runs games

Roleplay and narrative storytelling are my forté! I love to give my players the stage, and let you all shine in an environment you feel safe in. My philosophy is that the system is there to support the story, so while I have a respect for rules, I tend to overrule them if things are getting bogged down by specifics. Some of my favorite systems have no similarity to D&D, and I love exploring new systems, especially rules-lite ones! Anything that's easy to get everyone on board with and get roleplaying!

I once ran a session...

where my players met a high level assassin who was supposed to help them get through a tough encounter. I proceeded to roll awfully and even his +10 didn't hit more than once in the whole fight. Naturally, they adopted him.

I prep by

making sure I have all the possible scenes and maps available, plus some extra for when things go off the rails. I write bullet notes of goals and scenes to set up so that I can easily pick from something to get us going quickly.

Rules are...

a great framework for organizing play and keeping everybody on the same page, but not carved in stone. Wiggle room is okay.

I love it when a player

Initiates a conversation with another player to discuss events, theories, emotions, or anything for bonding. I love hearing players talk to each other about the game. It means I'm doing my job well.

I think it's a red flag when players...

talk over quiet members and dominate play, especially when they don't pay attention during scenes they are not a part of. This is a collaborative game and we work together, even if our characters don't.

I think min/maxing...

Is overrated. While it's useful for tough encounters, I will always prefer players who take "subpar" routes in favor of storytelling with their character.
