About Icarus

Roll20 GM since 2017 with over 1000 hours of experience. Military veteran specialising in grimdark sci-fi, fantasy and historical settings. Delivering well-prepared games on a punctual schedule. Sessions include a balance of unpredictability and improvisation. Expect high-quality VTTs, NPC interactions, supporting media, token art, and character immersion. If you love detailed and interconnected narratives with intrigue and puzzles, then we will have a blast telling stories together. My storytelling journey started in the mid-2000s with a few minis, a handful of little green soldiers and an old deck of cards to 'roll'. I was obsessed with Sci-fi tales of unique characters and heroic adventures, be it grand scale or humble beginnings. Fast forward many years, I found myself creating and hosting online server-based events in GMod (Event Master) and ARMA3 (Zeus Mission Maker) roleplay communities. Telling stories, creating roleplay environments and improvising as characters made thousands of hours fly by. Some would be surprised by the amount of hobby time I would spend writing stories for what was a free community activity, and the enjoyment and satisfaction of it was payment itself. When I found myself moving to TTRPG's I found the skills to be highly transferable in what was essentially another system format to apply creative flow into. Cyberpunk RED and 40k Imperium Maledictum systems in particular are my favourite to dive deep into lore and narratives.

People are always surprised when I tell them

that I edited and create all of the supporting media for my campaigns. Including galaxy maps, photoshopped dataslates, customised letters, token art and other supporting material to my sessions.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Detailed, creative and unpredictable.

When I'm not running games I'm...

painting, 3D printing, modding or gaming.

How Icarus runs games

🎲 A focus on roleplay elements and character interactions; there will not always be combat in every single session. But you will find combat scenarios to be tactically crafted with emphasis on teamwork and innovation. 🎲I balance preparation and improvisation skills to open the floor to player creativity for interactions or decisions. This means players' decisions with consequences and unexpected opportunities. 🎲You can be sure to expect puzzles or riddles that will challenge you and create a dynamic environment. 🎲 All Roll20 pages/maps are highly detailed with artistic or cinematic style visuals, sometimes with the inclusion of light background music (personally adjustable volumes). I take great pride in creating and editing creative bordered tokens for player characters and NPCs. 🎲Most of my Campaigns involve a degree of passive RP What this means in Roll20 is smaller '/me' actions that can occur in the chat, which build on top of the current interaction without interrupting anyone speaking. 🎲 I will often include 'Base-Building' aspects to most campaigns that can include the party gradually developing a stronghold or network of connections; developing influence/wealth/resources over time. In a Cyberpunk setting, this was the Crew taking over an abandoned lot and gradually renovating it through the campaign.

I prep by

creating a scaffold of locations, NPCs and key events that the party are most likely to progress toward in coming sessions. This allows for narrative flexibility and improvisation depending on party decisions. The maps, characters and plot lines are always ready to go regardless of randomness!

My games focus on...

character focused tales and the legacies that follow. From entire bloodlines of characters and story arcs spanning multiple years and dozens of sessions, being a part of a story developing is the most satisfying feeling.

Rules are...

an important starting point for creative TTRPGs. Knowing a system's rules well is useful, but balancing the Rule of Cool to better capture creativity will always be a priority in my sessions. I have never stopped an awesome moment from playing out due to a rule. Spirit of the game above all.

Icarus's ideal table

My table is all about care-free, story-driven fun. Although the themes can be dark, there’s plenty of room for in-character banter, table jokes, and moments to breathe between the action. You’ll fit in great if you: - Can roll with chaos and humour while still engaging with the world seriously when it matters. - Enjoy personal motivations and building relationships. - Are comfortable with casual banter between characters/players. - Respectfully conduct yourself, including microphone discipline (no hotmic/echo/attending from a suitable location) and being on time. Rules are important, but we will never get bogged down by them; if something slows the flow of the game, we’ll make a decisive call and keep the dice rolling.

I am for a vibe that's...

chill. You're here to roll dice and have a blast, so kick back and enjoy yourself.

I love it when a player

is enthusiastic about their character ideas and brings new chaos/energy to challenge the party.

I think min/maxing...

perfectly fine if that's your vibe. Keep in mind, I will balance opposition accordingly...
