About Jarett

Hey there! My name is Jarett Jones, and I have been a GM for the last few years in D&D. While that time has only consisted of me running one campaign that is still ongoing, I have run numerous one-shot adventures for a few different groups of people. Currently, I am only familiar with D&D 5e, but I aim to broaden my horizons over time and learn some of the other systems and TTRPG's that are out there. During this time, I have been a GM for people who have been playing the game for years and for people who are brand new to the game; both sides are fun to work with and present their own unique challenges as a GM. I have also played in multiple campaigns and one-shots so I know the player side of the game as well! I work a full-time job on midnights, and I am looking to do this on the side on my days off. However, my job comes with a decent amount of downtime, so preparation for sessions will never be an issue.

My favorite books are

I love the Percy Jackson Series and the Heroes of Olympus Series. I have read the Lord of the Rings Series and The Hobbit. I love the Kane Chronicles, Harry Potter, and most recently, I finished the Above the Black trilogy and started the original Mistborn Trilogy.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Creative - I love making new items or introducing new rulesets to the game. Understanding - I aim to understand where my players are coming from and what they aim to achieve in my games. Knowledgeable - I love answering questions and helping others learn to play and better understand the game.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Working my full-time job, gaming, playing Magic: The Gathering, working on my homebrew world, or spending time with my wife and daughter! I also enjoy reading books and watching various anime!

How Jarett runs games

My GM style is a mixture of both combat and roleplay; however, I tend to lean more towards the combat aspect of D&D. I thoroughly enjoy creating combat that requires you to think outside the box, with tough enemies and some environmental hazards thrown into the mix. After all, who doesn't enjoy a good, well-earned reward after a difficult combat? While I enjoy combat, I also enjoy a good roleplay scenario! Knowing how to learn important information about a particular mission often requires more than defeating enemies and finding a note on their bodies. I enjoy the challenge that players provide a GM when they get creative in a roleplay scenario to achieve whatever their end goal is!

I deal with rules issues by...

I try to understand where the miscommunication started and fix that, and then if that doesn't fix the issues, then I will try my best to reach an agreeable solution, even if that means changing the rules or creating a new rule that works for the situation at hand and can be applied moving forward!

Rules are...

Soft guidelines! I firmly believe that rules are not the end all be all. Some rules I think are useless, and others I think are fantastic! It's all about finding which rules work best for the table and oftentimes creating new rules so everyone can feel involved!

When it comes to voices

I believe that voices can sometimes make or break a role-playing opportunity. I am still working on my skills with different voices, but I do enjoy doing them!

Jarett's ideal table

I love creating a fun, laidback environment at my table. I enjoy having players with various skill levels because I believe everyone can help each other out and learn something from each other. I try to build an atmosphere where everyone can joke around and make fun of each other and their characters while still maintaining a level of respect and appreciation for each other. Being able to crack jokes with or at each other is one of the best parts of DnD! I try to have my table be as immersive as possible with music, background sounds, and voices. As well as detailed descriptions of what is happening. Overall, a player who knows how to communicate their boundaries, respect the boundaries of others, and have a good time will be a good fit for my table!

I love it when a player

Gets creative and thinks outside the box. My job as a GM is to create an environment that players can enjoy and get creative in. I love it when a player makes me stretch my imagination to come up with a creative solution for something that makes me deal with an absolutely random encounter.

I think it's a red flag when players...

steal the spotlight from another player, especially in a major situation that is not pertaining specifically to your character. Let other players enjoy their moments as much as you would want others to let you enjoy yours. Remember, it is a group roleplaying experience, not just a one-man band!

I think min/maxing...

Can be fun! So long as you build the stats into your character's background and story, you can still make your character have a personality and play it well, even when min/maxing. You also need to know when to let other players have their moments to fail or succeed, and not overuse your strengths.
