About Gabriel
From the depths of dungeons to the far reaches of space, I've been playing and running RPGs since sometime in the last millennium, and even though my own first session of D&D was a long time ago, I still remember it like it was yesterday. That's one of the things I enjoy most about this hobby--introducing new players to it! My approach to GMing is pretty laid-back. While it's important to be consistent and fair, I'm not a stickler for rules; if a player wants to try something odd or untested, I'm almost always going to let them. Likewise, I'd much rather spend our time telling cool stories together than looking up obscure rules in a manual. For me, it's all about maintaining the pace of the story, keeping everyone involved, and creating thrilling / funny / heartbreaking moments that will live on long after the dice are put away. My top three favorite games are Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Eden Studios), Call of Cthulhu (Chaosium), and the old Marvel Super Heroes game from the 80s (TSR). That said, I also love The One Ring, D&D, and the "retro-clone" Basic Fantasy RPG. A few personal details to help you decide if we'd be a good fit: - Outside of the game room, I'm a musician (singer/songwriter), recording engineer, and record producer. - Before I became a full-time musician/producer, I was a college English (writing) professor. - I tend to run more story-driven games as opposed to tactical combat-driven ones. That's because 1) I like that style better and 2) I'm Really Bad at Math. - I love playing with diverse groups of people and am a big proponent of bringing more women and People of Color into the hobby. - I have several parrots who may drop in to "help" from time to time. Feel free to ask any questions!

My favorite shows/movies are
SHOWS: Star Trek (esp. TOS, TNG, and SNW), Northern Exposure (my all-time favorite), Buffy, The Muppet Show, & tons more. MOVIES: Forbidden Planet, Only Lovers Left Alive, Alien, Ghostbusters, LA Story, Almost Famous, The Commitments, Grand Budapest Hotel, The Shining, Wonder Boys, and so many more
My favorite system of all Time is
The old FASERIP system from Marvel Super Heroes back in the 1980s. I just love how fast and easy it is, as well as its flexibility. You can have characters of vastly different power levels and it handles them all well. Second-favorite was the Cinematic Unisystem from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer RPG
When I'm not running games I'm...
Usually in the recording studio as a full-time recording engineer and music producer. I'm also an active singer/songwriter and recording artist myself. Feel free to Google-stalk me. :)
How Gabriel runs games
I like a blend of action and roleplaying, but am definitely more of a "cinematic" or storyteller GM. That is, I prefer drama and character-driven action over rules and tactics. I try my best to bring all of the "extras" (allies, enemies, etc.) to life with unique voices, motivations, and mannerisms and also to bring the players into our shared imaginary world through ample sensory details--sights, sounds, smells, etc. Whether GMing, writing, or storytelling, I'm a firm believer in SHOWING over TELLING.

My games focus on...
heroism, noble causes, and a sense of wonder.
Rules are...
there to be a guide, not a straightjacket.
Gabriel's ideal table
My ideal table is a group of people who are friends first and gamers second. Everyone should be enjoying themselves and should get a chance to shine and Do Something Cool. I don't like players who boss others around or who try to horn-in on every scene and decision. They should also treat each other with kindness and respect.

I think metagaming...
can be hard to avoid (we all do it to an extent), but also one of the fun challenges of roleplaying. Part of playing a role is acting in the way your character would and pretending you don't have outside knowledge.
I think min/maxing...
is a waste of time. Everyone wants to do well in the game, but the point of an RPG isn't to "win"--it's to tell a fun story in which everyone has a part to play.
My table is not the place for...
sexism, racism, or gatekeeping against new players.
