About Mickey - Fabulam Ludens

Hello there! My name is Mickey, I am very passionate about stories and storytelling and believe that Tabletop Role-Playing Games are the most unique way to engage with them. I think that our ability to share ideas and stories with one-another is magical, and that TTRPGs allow for a unique, collaborative experience that can be enjoyed by all. To quote someone who's a big inspiration to many: "It is the most fun you can have with your brain". I am the co-owner of "Dream Realm DnD" partnered Discord server with over 13000 members and that's where most of my TTRPG experience comes from. I've been playing TTRPGs for almost six years and Game Mastering for almost five. It's safe to say that it has become an inseparable part of my life and that becoming a full time Game Master would be a dream come true! I also enjoy introducing new people to the hobby and have had great success helping many beginners play for the first time, especially on our server. I hope we'll share a lot of exciting adventures together! Most of my experience is focused on Dungeons & Dragons 5e (2014), but I have also recently started dedicating time to MCDM's Draw Steel. I might branch out to other systems over time, but for now I focus on the story first, and the system second. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

I became a GM because

I found out that playing TTRPGs doesn't have to just be playing Tabletop Role-Playing Games, it can also be a unique, collaborative storytelling experience, allowing for different perspectives filled with many emotions, most of which compassion. Such experiences can be cherished for a lifetime.

I got started GMing...

because of the "Beginner-friendly DM" event on the "Dream Realm" Discord server back in 2021. I was inspired by how many of our members were willing to give DMing a try, and after listening to the wise words of Matthew Colville, I decided to try at least one little one-shot. After that I was hooked!

When I'm not running games I'm...

prepping for them or thinking about 'em! GM-ing is an important part of my life and I enjoy it immensely. I also spend time reading books, watching films and shows and playing video games. They are an amazing source of inspiration! Sometimes I even create custom art for items, NPCs and architecture.

How Mickey - Fabulam Ludens runs games

I firmly believe that any good game has all three pillars of adventure present: exploration, social interaction and combat. I try my best to incorporate aspects that make each of them most fun: all NPCs have depth, they are people in their own right with internal lives; the world is an unknown and mysterious place to explore and it's filled with many dangers that you must face; when possible, I try to make combat dynamic, exciting and non-repetitive. I believe that I mostly distribute the pillars as 50% social interaction, 30% combat and 20% exploration, but that can vary depending on the players' preference. What I care about the most are the player characters. I like knowing their backstories and motivations and I try to make them a part of the world. The characters you create and the choices they make will shape everything around them, so I hope you are ready to deal with the consequences! I am eager to help people during character creation and even have pre-generated characters for those overwhelmed by choices! I also love roleplay, both in thinking "what would this character do" and behaving as the NPC during play, but I do not expect the latter from the players.

My games focus on...

story and fun! I mostly run published adventures and modify them to the taste and needs of the group as time goes on. I also like to collaborate with players and incorporate player character backstories into the world of the game. It can make the experience more personal, memorable and believable!

Rules are...

the language we use to talk about the game. We need to know the language enough to be able to communicate ideas with each other, but we shouldn't get too caught up with the "grammar". Meaning knowing the rules is important, but they aren't a tyrant to be obeyed, they are a tool to express ourselves!

When it comes to voices

I do not expect anyone to do them. People can confuse role-play with doing voices, but the two are not the same. I appreciate more when players try to think like their characters, and how their thoughts differ from their own. Doing voices is unrelated to that, but fun! I find them fun to do too!

Mickey - Fabulam Ludens's ideal table

My table is usually very friendly, positive and cooperative. I try to help cultivate a welcoming atmosphere where the end goal is always to have fun! Almost all types of players - both active players & casual players, but also story-tellers, actors, tacticians, min/maxers, however you describe yourself, are welcome! As long as you respect other players, your own character and the world they inhabit, you'll be a good fit! I most enjoyed playing D&D with my friends in person, sitting round a table, eating snacks, using pen and paper, listening to music and rolling dice. Thus, the general vibe at my table imitates that simplicity - it's not about being fancy with tech, just about having good old fun with people you like spending time with!

I am for a vibe that's...

relaxing, exciting and fun. My goal is always to try my best to make the game a positive experience for all players. There are epic tales to be told and great deeds to be done, but none of that matters if you're not enjoying the ride. I am always for players communicating any problems or needs!

I love it when a player

keeps track of their own character, the character's motivation and the world around them. Basically, when the player is invested in the game. Knowing your character sheet well, knowing what drives your character and keeping notes during the game goes a long way, both for the GM and for the player!

My table is not the place for...

people who do not respect other players, other characters or the world they inhabit. At the table, players need to be polite to each other. They also shouldn't be selfish in this collaborative game and it would be appreciated if they don't go on their own out of nowhere, unless that was agreed upon!
