About Egg Eggleton

Howdy, I'm Egg! Firstly, yes that is actually my name. Secondly, let me tell you a bit about myself. I've been a GM for over 6 years now, ever since I was a teenager running my first D&D game for some mates. I'm also a writer, currently studying English Literature & Creative Writing at university. I have my own fantasy setting with developed lore, maps, and character options which I still add to regularly. My games are dramatic, thrilling, and character-driven. If you're looking for a game master to introduce you or a friend to roleplaying, look no further. I ran a beginner's roleplaying club in my sixth form during my teen years, and currently do introductory sessions for my university's RPG society. What I'm saying is, I've got plenty of experience helping people find their feet in the tabletop world. I hope to hear from you!

I became a GM because

I've always found myself as a community-builder, someone that likes to bring people together, and GMing uses a lot of those same skills.

I got started GMing...

Running Hunt For the Thessalhydra for some friends - we had a very loose understanding of the rules, and they almost died fighting troglodytes. It got very silly.

My favorite shows/movies are

My favourite films are Alien and Jurassic Park; I love sci-fi, fantasy, and horror.

How Egg Eggleton runs games

My style is very immersion-focused, with emphasis placed on the characters and world. NPCs have lives and goals outside of the players, monsters exist as living beings rather than just obstacles to be killed, and careless actions have unforeseen outcomes. This also influences my rulings as a game master, as I will forego the rules only if they don't cover a situation or I believe that they don't do the circumstances justice. If a player attempts something which should be more effective (or more dangerous) than the rules allow for, I will alter the rules to feel more appropriate. Generally, I try to keep things light-hearted above the table but grounded within the fiction of the game. Depending on the system and setting this could mean gritty, apathetic NPCs or a delightful string of charming farmers. I aim to have the world around my players react appropriately to their actions.

I deal with rules issues by...

Making a decision, explaining my reasons why to my players, and leaving room for suggestions if they have a better idea.

My favorite trope is...

The comic relief character having secret angst.

Rules are...

A tool to be used; they should be enforced to add to the fun, not in spite of it.

Egg Eggleton's ideal table

I expect my players to respect each other, themselves, and me. If a player has an issue that they want to be handled, I ask them to speak to me so that I can accommodate - whether that is a problem with my style of GMing, or another player's behaviour. I'm happy to deal with things on my players' behalf, but I won't step in unless asked to. My ideal players are people who take charge of their characters, who will keep their goals and motivations in mind when roleplaying but not sacrifice the rest of the party's enjoyment. If someone chooses to play a character who does not have a reason to stay with the group, I may ask them to make a new character with goals more in-line with the game. In exchange, I promise to run a game where a character's personal story matters just as much as the wider narrative I introduce. I mine player characters' backstories for quest opportunities, key NPCs, and villains that can make for dramatic moments.

I am for a vibe that's...

Earnest but not self-serious. We should be allowed to laugh at our characters from time to time.

I love it when a player

asks me, "Hey, I know it's not in the rules, but could I..?" I still try to follow the spirit of the rules, so using a spell to deal damage when it's intended not to usually comes at a steep cost (for example), but I always encourage my players to try.

My table is not the place for...

Anybody who won't treat their fellow players, or the world of the game, with respect. If four out of five players are trying to play a gothic horror game, but the fifth keeps hijacking the tone with slapstick, it gets in the way of everybody else's fun.
