About Dreamerboy

LGBTQ+ | Filipino-American | Game Designer | Writer | Dreamer Hey there! I’m Josh. I’ve always thought you can get a good impression of a person from their favorite games. So here are a few of mine: Hades Sekiro Wildermyth Outward Bug Fables I grew up near Seattle in the rainy, romantic gray skies of the Pacific Northwest. About 4 years ago I moved to Taiwan to teach English and improve my Mandarin. As a kid I was terminally at home, tearing through books, watching movies and playing games. Always with a sense of anticipation. "When would my adventure would begin?" As I’ve aged, I’ve grown to love how stories offer a reflection of the complex inner worlds we all have. In a way, my journey has already begun. Just like those characters, we are all the main characters of our own stories; but there is something special when we can see those inner lives reflected in one another. I design games and write stories to pursue the connection that transforms a bunch of solitary protagonists into a community. Also, it’s fun! I have been DMing for 9 years; a lot of that time spent with my recent home group that spans the whole world (from Ireland to Taiwan!) I mostly enjoy writing custom content and tailoring stories to the people I’m playing with. I love surprises, and I am really good at hyping up my players. Yes! Of course your feathers can turn into blades. Yes! Of course the banjo is a bard instrument. Let’s get a little silly and pursue our unique stories in a world that itself is stranger than fiction.

I got started GMing...

when my first character died tragically on the last session of my first campaign. I was shocked by how attached I had become and I knew that even if that campaign was over I had to play more. Even if I had to GM it myself.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Working out, developing games, and exploring Taiwan.

How Dreamerboy runs games

Fiction-forward storytelling is how I lead my players into engaging plots and combat that feel fraught without being bogged down by specifics. I create the conflict; and the players decide how to resolve the conflict. Think of it as "well-prepared GM always ready for improvisation." Have fun! Stretch your creativity to its limit. If the rules get in the way then the rules should be bent; but not broken. I always tell my players that the best way to approach my games is in good faith with the rules, the GM, and the other players. If you dream of challenging combat, epic personal moments, and engaging storylines: opt into a session 0 with me.

I deal with rules issues by...

discussion. Do the rules seem fair? Can the rule be bent to be more fair and true to the fiction?

My games focus on...

exploring smaller stories personal to the players within the context of a greater campaign that binds the party together. I love to homebrew custom items and abilities for players; and I love it even more when they pitch it themselves. Be open to tweaks!

Dreamerboy's ideal table

My tables are a mix of experienced veterans and diceless newbies. I'm happy to set up players with pre-made character sheets and teach as we go. I will have a working knowledge of what you can do. Ideally you do as well; but nudges, reminders, and even re-educating are expected. I find that my favorite tables have one thing in common no matter what their experience level is: everyone wants to have a good time. If you approach the table with a good attitude, then we can work together to tell an amazing story.
