About me
As a pro GM I have identity issues. So many identities, so many issues. In every day life I have issues too, but they are few. I am a father and a husband. I love my family, our little twig of a branch of an old highland clan. My family is multicultural, with me being raised in New Zealand, and my wife growing up in Cambodia. We live in Siem Reap with our three children. Our lives have come together and intertwined and we are blessed. I love stories and conversation. I take time to dream. I live a simple life with games and stories being my source of entertainment and connection with the people around me. Everyone has a story to tell, and anyone can bond through playing games. With a background in hospitality, tourism and community work, I will endeavor to make sure you are well cared for while I throw hell and highwater at your characters. It won't seem like it as an ogre cooks your pet or a dragon burns your companion to a crisp, but I do so with love and the hope for a fun escape from our varied daily lives that can still have a meaningful resonance in our thoughts. I've seen mayhem and magic, triumph and loss and even unexpected moments of depth and emotional gravitas at game tables I've hosted. It is my hope that this site will give me the opportunity to run games for players who embrace a spirit of cooperation and a willingness to push through adversity together in any number of weird and wonderful ways.
GM Style
This isn’t your father’s D&D…it’s your batsh*t crazy uncles’ D&D, straight from the smokey garage with faded Errol Otus posters on the walls and Black Sabbath shredding up in the old tape deck. You might turn up your nose at first, but once the dice start rolling you find yourself sucked in. Yeah, I'm that guy. Welcome to my imaginary world. I draw on my Scots heritage of tales of little folk, giants and hags, a youth spent of devouring fantasy, science fiction and historical fiction (while my eyes could still see in the dark). I draw on old stories such as those from the Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Old Testament, and newer ones like those told of Beowulf, Tristan & Isolde, Cu Chulainn & the Morrigan, Siegfried & Kreimhild. I am full of myth and my cup runneth over. The story teller in me compels me to use silly or scary voices sometimes, but I don't expect you to if you don't want to. We all have our own way of playing the game in an engaging and thoughtful manner, and we bring the most fun to the table when we are using a voice that conveys our character in a way we are personally comfortable with. People have different aspirations when playing RPG's. I try to accomodate everyone, and hope that you will try to as well. Rulings over rules. When stripped back to it's racing bones, D&D is a simple, fun and flexible roleplaying system. Lets make the most of it and play games that embrace bravery, the clatter of dice, cries of despair and howls of glory. I really like Owlbear Rodeo and Discord as ways to connect us for a game. Currently I use Google Drive & Sheets for character sheets and handouts, and am looking at options for shared online world building and campaign management. In truth though, even if all we have is mic & headset, paper, pencil & dice, we have everything we need to play a roleplaying game. Some people prefer one way or the other, I'm easy. I run my home D&D campaign setting "Lands of Caldrona" with my variant ruleset called "Deathray & Dragonbreath" which was built on an already upgraded B/X chassis in my garage to stand toe to toe with newer versions of the game. If you've played any version of D&D before, you'll pick it up easy. It's rules light, flexible and relies on engagement, wit & dice not piles of rulebooks. I also enjoy running roleplaying adventures using D&D5e and D100 systems like Call of Cthulhu and Mythras, and am well read on many other rule systems, settings and adventures which I often draw inspiration from. While I've run a lot of one shots, and enjoy the "all in" game that usually results from that style of play, for me the gradually building layers and momentum of campaign play is where roleplaying games really shine as players come to grips with rules, setting, their characters and most importantly one another as they form a bond of fellowship and forge their own unique story. Influences Childhood heroes: Robin Hood, Ned Kelly & Jesus Christ. Music: The Wailers, The Highwaymen, Bob Dylan, Sinead O'Connor, Black Sabbath, Marlon Williams, Tracy Chapman, Midnight Oil. Inspiring Games: BECMI Dungeons & Dragons, Chess, Rugby, Blood Bowl, Mount & Blade, Rome Total War, Pixel Dungeon, Stardew Valley. Films: The Good the Bad & the Ugly, Excalibur, Spirited Away & Princess Mononoke, Fellowship of the Ring, The Dark Horse, Miracle Maker, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Hunt For the Wilderpeople.
