About Dominic

Hi! My name is Dominic, and I hail from the land of beer and cheese, here to help tell your tale! I first got sucked into D&D about six or seven years ago, and just dove right in to 5e. My second ever campaign kicked off as a virtual DM during the Covid-19 era. Since then, I have basically been running games for friends and family on Roll20 nonstop, bouncing between pre-written adventures and home brew content. Running and playing D&D is one my favorite things to do with people because it lets you see a side of them they would otherwise never get to express. As a DM, I enjoy being caught off guard by a player's idea, because it tests what I know of my own plans and my ability to think on my feet. It also helps flesh out the world and the story that we are creating together, with more pointed details of the characters we are breathing life into. I hope to share that journey with you, if even for a short while.

My favorite books are

surprise -- it's fantasy! I've been working my way through The Harpers Forgetten Realms series, and thoroughly enjoyed Matt Colville's Priest, and Thief.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Creative. Fair. Adaptable.

When I'm not running games I'm...

plotting my next session, reading/gaming for inspiration, or spending time with my family.

How Dominic runs games

I believe that D&D should be a collaborative experience, and the story should be told as a group. The more players interact with the world, the more the world can interact with them. I find enjoyment in everything from the big city soiree, to the crunchy trap-filled dungeons (but if I had to pick a favorite, it's the dungeons). I like to have a good balance of RP and combat, too much of either can feel like a drag. I am mostly by the book, but have been known to sprinkle in some rule-of-cool, and will generally have a hard time not mixing in a little humor into whatever genre I am running. As always, and above all: it's only fun, if we're all having fun.

I deal with rules issues by...

asserting my role as the GM. If there is a disagreement and a consensus cannot be reached, the GM is obligated to make a ruling and move on. Things can be discussed between sessions, events can be retconned, but we can't get back the time we wasted arguing semantics.

I prep by

defining broad strokes of the story and the mechanisms of the world, and allowing the players be the dowsing rod for the time and place that events happen. I make sure that I am educated enough on my own setting and story that improvising the randomness of player interaction is not an issue.

Rules are...

an excellent way to get everyone started on the same page. That said, I do have space for Rule-of-Cool, and I also have house rules that I like to employ.

Dominic's ideal table

I like to keep a pretty laid back and friendly table that is accepting of mistakes and learning curves. I've on-boarded several newbies, and like to keep a table that is tolerant of folks who don't have everything memorized(even that folk is me). If you like cracking jokes and making friends, humorous expeditions and heroic fantasies where Sean Bean would actually survive, this may be the table for you.

I love it when a player

surprises me. As a DM, you can plan and plot and connect all the dots, but none of that survives contact with player interaction, and that is what breathes life into the world you are creating together.

I think min/maxing...

is just another way to play the game.

My perfect party mix is

a group of players that vibe well with each other. Players that can communicate freely with one another and are on the same page will make any class/party composition work.
