About Aaron

I started playing D&D about 15 years ago, and then began running my own games of 5e 9 years ago, and since then have been running multiple games every week. For the last few years I started running Pathfinder 2e, and have even begun dabbling in some other RPGs like Call of Cthulhu, Mothership, and Shadowdark. My games usually have a good amount of challenging combat encounters, and fun exploration in the wilderness and dungeons. I do still try to balance that with meaningful roleplay, and interesting NPCs. While I'd say I aim for a more serious tone, my games are definitely relaxed and chill. I'm here to have fun, and that happens when all the players are enjoying the game.

I became a GM because

When I was introduced to D&D, I was obsessed. I enjoyed telling stories, and when I was a player I loved hearing about other characters and their stories, as well as all the neat NPCs and villains. Once 5e was released, I tried running a game, and discovered a true passion and never stopped.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and chill

When I'm not running games I'm...

Probably prepping another session, learning more about the systems I run (and others I'd like to try), or consuming more TTRPG content for inspiration. When I decide to take a break from TTRPGs, I'll usually be playing video games or board games, or catching up on a tv show I've neglected to watch.

How Aaron runs games

I try to have a fairly balanced game, but I do lean more towards an action filled game, with many challenging tactical combats. If you like exploring the wilderness, delving into dungeons, and fighting monsters, then you would enjoy my games. There is definitely still roleplaying, and social encounters. I'm definitely no voice actor, but I like having fun playing NPCs, and interacting with the player characters, or just sitting back and letting the player characters interact with each other. In regards to rules, I like rules as written balanced with rule of cool. I like to understand the official rules, and like consistency with the rules, but I also encourage players to find unique ways to enjoy the narrative freedom of doing epic and cool things when it fits the story.

I deal with rules issues by...

taking maybe a minute or two to try looking up a rule, and if unable to, ask the table what they think, and make a quick simple ruling on the fly. I usually try to rule in favor of the players. Between sessions I'll try to dig a little deeper and come to a more complete final ruling.

Rules are...

important to understand to keep the game consistent and fair. I like to know the rules of a system well before I start to hack it and add a bunch of house rules. As much as I like to follow rules as written, I'll still always be open to bending the rules for cool and epic moments, or clever ideas.

Aaron's ideal table

Featured Prompts

I am for a vibe that's...

chill and laid back. While I aim for a somewhat seriousish tone for the games I run, the players at the table are more of a "beer and pretzels" style. We'll chat and make some jokes, we're here to have a fun time

I love it when a player

creates a cool backstory that gives the character motivation to adventure, is deep yet open enough to add to, and involves other characters that could possibly pop up during the campaign.

I think min/maxing...

can be good! I think it's important to make a competent character, which involves good stats and abilities. If it gets in the way of RP and the character, then maybe its gone too far. As long as you are able to play a fun character that works with the group, there should be no issues
