About James

I am the host and DM of the Multi-Award Nominated Comedy D&D 5e Podcast - Roll Britannia. Author of the TTRPG Magic Item Books "The Catalogue of Chaos" based on the magic items featured on my TikTok DungeonMasterUK. I have been GMing since April 2020, over 300 hours of my GMing is available to listen to on the feed of Roll Britannia. Through my work with Driftforge Games, I have written many D&D 5e compatible oneshots, magic items, and monster books, as well as unique RPG games, all published by Critical Kit. My GMing style is always very rules light, ideal for beginners and for players who want a more Roleplaying experience, that leans into the "Rule of Cool".

I got started GMing...

Because of lockdown, I was off work and legally not allowed to see people, so I decided to start my first ever D&D campaign, and just for fun decided to record it and share it on the internet... and if you suggest to some friends that we play D&D it's rude to ask one of them to DM as well

When I'm not running games I'm...

Creating my D&D Podcast - Roll Britannia. Holding live panels about D&D, playing D&D live on stage, or generally shouting the praises of TTRPGs to the world.

How James runs games

My GMing style is always very rules light, ideal for beginners and for players who want a more Roleplaying experience, that leans into the "Rule of Cool". Rules as written are a fantastic starting point but my games are always much more focussed on telling a group story together, and having a laugh whilst doing so, dice rolls forma. part of that story, and so does convincing the GM that you really can do the thing you want to do, even if the rules don't say how.

Featured Prompts

I deal with rules issues by...

employing the rule of cool, and either establishing this as the new way things are in the game, or providing a narrative reason why it works that way on this occasion.

My games focus on...

fun, collective story telling, and lighthearted roleplaying

Rules are...

more like guidelines than actual rules

James's ideal table

Players who are new to D&D, and players that want a fun filled rules light roleplaying game. My games are designed to be as inclusive as possible. My games will be largely run with theatre of the mind, as a dnd podcaster I am used to describing scenes in an easy to understand way. The games will be light hearted and not particularly dark or gritty. And there will be a mix of combat and roleplaying needed, my table will suit players who are looking for more than just a combat filled dungeon crawl, but may want to think their way through a puzzle or perhaps just blag their way out of trouble.

Featured Prompts

I think metagaming...

is fine to help new players understand how the game works, but should be treated as training wheels, once the basics are grasped I encourage my players to immerse themselves in their characters and the world.

I think min/maxing...

is fine, but expect me to put your character in situations that will both suit your character and be very challenging for your character

My table is not the place for...

Dark gritty gameplay, constant PvP, or players looking for tough combat filled dungeon crawls. Nor is it a place for any intentional prejudice, or players unwilling to step beyond the rules as written and just tell a fun story together.
