About DarrenC
Good Day! Thanks for stopping by! Please let me tell you a bit about myself. I am first and foremost a husband and father, living the dream with 3 teenaged kids and an aging dog. My journey with D&D & RPG's reaches all the way back to 1989 when I was 11 years old, and my two brothers and I received the 2nd Edition rule books as a Christmas present....oh how I remember the fights over rulings between us as young lads, I think I still have a scar or two left from those games. I played various other systems over the years, but have been primarily back to playing D&D since 5th editions arrival. I now DM and play-in games mostly with my family & friends; We actually get together with another family and play every Sunday, there is 11 of us around the table, it is chaos and pure joy, and we have been doing this for several years now with no signs of stopping. I have also hosted countless games for friends and strangers both in person and online. As a DM, I am a World Builder, and a Storyteller. I recently retired a world that had dozens of campaigns played in it ranging over thousands of years of world time. I have been using a new world for the last year that does lean a little more futuristic or even cyberpunk, although there is still heavy D&D fantasy and lore spread throughout. This world is heavily influenced by games, and media that have left an impression on me, most of those influences are subtle, but are definitely there and will be picked up on by players who know. My biggest joy of TTRPG's is crafting adventures with my players. I base my campaigns on Player Character's backstories, so every campaign is unique to the party. Seeing or hearing the players reactions when they encounter something from their backstory is probably my favorite part of being a DM....although I do love throwing challenging scenarios at my players as well! I am not a full-time paid DM. You will not find me running several campaigns at a time. I run one or two paid games at a time, focusing heavily on those games, and the players. IRL, I am semi-retired working part-time at a business I sold a little while back. I DM as a hobby, but as it is a hobby that I invest a lot of time in for virtual strangers, I do ask to be rewarded for my efforts. My games may be at a bit of a premium price, but if you are looking for a big story-telling adventure, I believe you will have a premium experience.. The tables I DM are open to everyone who is looking to have a good time gaming with a group of others. I do not tolerate any kind of discrimination. I fully support the LGBTQ+ community, and anyone of any pronouns is welcome around the table. I am new player friendly, happy to teach the ropes of the game as well as how to use D&D Beyond and other tools. I have DM'd for people age 7 to 70+ and am happy to have any age player at the table, although, it may depend on the table, and most my games will be listed as 19+. If you are a player under 19 who wants to play in one of my games, please reach out to me through a direct message to discuss. I typically do not run One-Shots, and I do not run Modules. I only run long format campaigns in a world built by me and the players who have played in it. PS. My daughter selected the profile pic! She said it makes me look like a fun guy!

I got started GMing...
At 11 years old when I received the 2nd Edition rule book set as a Christmas present. I ran solo adventurers for myself, and games for my brothers.
My favorite shows/movies are
I grew up watching the original Star Wars trilogies endlessly, and they still rank amongst my favorite movies. I also still enjoy a lot of the new Star Wars media (trash me if you want). As an adult, I really got into some darker movies and shows, and I have too many favs to list.
When I'm not running games I'm...
Running my kids around, lol. But seriously, I have very active kids, and most of my free time is spent with them at various functions.
How DarrenC runs games
I like to DM games that are role-play and exploration heavy with combats sprinkled in. I do not use a lot of traps and puzzles but will fit some in from time to time. I have a few character voices in my repertoire, but it isn't something I delve into a whole lot - you will hear the same voices used for different characters. I do my best to give every NPC their own personality flair of some kind. The games I DM are player friendly; my interpretation of that is providing player's with challenging situations and rewarding them when they think of creative and fun ways to get through those situations. I will bend the rules for the sake of fun, but I am mostly a Rules-as-Written DM. Fair warning, I have been known to kill player characters or beloved NPC's from time to time if that is the way the game goes. I am not a DM vs. Player DM. I want to see the players succeed as I put so much effort into building their stories into my world that, but the game has to have risks, and tension, otherwise, what's the point? My absolute favorite part of the game is the group story telling, and honing in on big moments. Using character backstories and ambitions to drive a group narrative is the goal of my games....that and FUN!

I deal with rules issues by...
When I make a ruling, it's the ruling at the time, and good or bad we all live with it, similar to a sports official. If there is an issue with that ruling, we talk about it after, if I have to adjust my rulings going forward, we make note of it. I do not hold long rulings discussions in game.
I prep by
Brainstorming. Ideas pop into my head, and I make quick notes. I don't fully flesh out an idea until a party decides to pursue it. My games are driven by the party decisions, so my DM style is to provide the party with an interesting world, a few things to do, and then just go with it...
Rules are...
A really good foundational guideline that are meant to be tweaked, bent, and on rare occasions even broken when the situation calls for it.
DarrenC's ideal table
The tables I DM are built around group storytelling. Players who enjoy role-play, and exploring the fantasy world around them are the ones who will get the most out of the games I DM. In the games I DM, there are combats, and there are dungeon crawls, but pretty much all of them will tie into the narratives being built. I do not generally run combat just for the sake of running combat. Players who primarily enjoy hack-n-slash style campaigns may not enjoy my games as much. I am of the opinion that it is such a varied gaming genre that we may all enjoy different aspects of the game(s), and that it is important to find the right table for you. I am self aware enough to realize that I might not be the right DM for everyone, and I do not take that personally. The flip side of that, is that it is possible that someone might not be right for the games I DM. As I am looking to build long-term campaigns that can spare over multiple years, I do have an onboarding process, including a free one on one first meeting with me to discuss TTRPG's and a little bit of life in general. I want to ensure that we are a good fit together. I am not here just to pile up paying customers, I want to foster a long term gaming relationship. In that vein, I am generally in the game chat 10-15 minutes before the scheduled start time, and encourage others to join early, as it is a good time to get to know one another. After I call an end to the session, I will also generally stay around for a few minutes to debrief, and players are welcome to stay in the chat for as long as they like after the games. I would say that the general overall vibe of my tables is one of cooperation. We all work together to have as good a time as we can. I encourage having all the gaming emotions at the table, and navigating our way together through an epic campaign.

I think metagaming...
Bad Form!!! Using knowledge you the player may have without first asking the DM if your character would know that is, to me, cheating. I am more than happy to oblige a roll on what your character may know about a situation or an opponent.
My perfect party mix is
Players playing the characters they want to play. If players want to balance the party, go for it, if you want to have 5 spellcasters, go for that too. There are ways to work around party composition.
My table is not the place for...
To be blunt....being a jerk, or being disrespectful to other players, in or out of game. There definitely can be tensions amongst characters, but I will not tolerate those tensions extenuating from real-life issues. If we have problems at the table, we talk it out, respectfully, as real-life people.
