About SpaceMage

I'm SpaceMage, an experienced Dungeon Master who loves bringing long-running adventures to life I've run campaigns for over a decade. I started off running the Delian Tomb with friends, then random one shots with a group for three years. After that I ran a four-year Dungeon of the Mad Mage campaign, and currently am running a updated version of The Night Below. I love creating adventures with memorable characters, interesting choices, ridiculous situations, and just enough danger to keep everyone honest. My style leans toward storytelling, roleplay and player agency, with plenty of room for the unexpected. I love an old school dungeon delve. 🎲 I'm also a lecturer, so I'm very comfortable helping new players learn the game without making them feel like they've accidentally enrolled in an exam. 😄 Outside of D&D, I'm a massive board-game and film nerd, which probably explains why I like cinematic adventures, weird NPCs and occasionally treating a goblin like the main character.🎬👹 If you enjoy classic fantasy, immersive adventures, character development and discovering what lies around the next corner, pull up a chair. Let's see what happens when the dice hit the table.

I started running games because...

I wanted to play badly and there was nobody in my town that even knew what Roleplaying games were! I love the sweet escape from the mundane that we get form playing a game. I enjoy teaching the game and seeing the light in their eyes when the concepts click and they do something awesome!

My favorite books are

Legend by David Gemmell for some Heroic Fantasy Thud! bt Terry Pratchett Foundation by Isaac Asimov Daughter of the Drow by Elaine Cunningham The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi Planet of Exile by Ursula K. Le Guin Jack Four by Neal Asher The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson Goblin Hero by Jim Hine

People are always surprised when I tell them

I collect typewriters and old media.

How SpaceMage runs games

🎭 Story first, chaos welcome! My games lean into roleplay, character moments, exploration and player-driven storytelling, with plenty of combat when things inevitably go sideways. ⚔️ I like encounters that are exciting and meaningful rather than just rolling initiative for the sake of it. 🎬 Expect cinematic moments, memorable NPCs, weird situations, terrible player decisions, and a world that reacts to what you do. I’ll give you a story to explore, but you decide where it goes. New players are absolutely welcome — I’ll help with the rules without turning the game into a lecture. 😄I like having a laugh and keeping it casual.

SpaceMage's ideal table

I enjoy it when players really ham it up and get into their character portrayals. A bit of acting is great, but not a requirement. I hate it when players meta-game and talk stats and ac. I dont mind if we all talk about irl stuff sometimes but It's escapism for a reason. I prefer when players develop their personalities and roleplay on each long or short rest. Backstories develop when we do this. Not very into min-maxers. If you have to I can accept it but it's about the group and the adventure first. Exploring and discovering hidden rooms, secrets and treasures with my players is amazing. The world will change and if you do things there will always be the consequences to deal with. Combat is not my strongest suit. I like to put variation in the combat and hate flinging just 100 generic goblins at my players.

I am for a vibe that's...

Immersive: The world feels worth investigating, and NPCs feel like people rather than quest dispensers. Collaborative: Players help create memorable moments rather than competing for attention. Adventurous: There's a sense of discovery, danger and anticipation. Character-driven: Decisions matter

I love it when a player

Enjoys getting into character, whether through voices or dialogue. Players that are curious and engage with the surroundings. Players who enjoy a mixture of roleplay, exploration, problem-solving and combat.

My table is not the place for...

Meta-gamers that pull the whole group out of the experience. Those looking almost exclusively for frequent, challenging tactical combat. (depends on the adventure too) Those who have little interest in roleplay or interacting with the world between fights.
