About Myka Laba

I am a generally nerdy and friendly individual who has a passion for storytelling. I do creative writing for fun and have for over 2 decades. I have been playing ttrpgs for nearly as long as well. I GMed my first ever game (D&D 3.5) at 12 years old and fell in love with the idea of creating a world for people to play in. An open sandbox where creativity flows and people come together for a great time. I have since GMed multiple campaigns from start to story finish, levels 1-20 in D&D 5e (2014) as well as in Fabula Ultima. I love creating and building stories alongside other creatives and look forward to helping people enjoy some freetime.

I became a GM because

I love creativity and storytelling, and want to help others experience the joy of participating in telling a story!

I got started GMing...

When I was twelve. My father had to gently explain to me that if my brother wanted to kill the unicorn instead of save it, that was allowed. It helped me learn to roll with the players.

How Myka Laba runs games

I lean into player backstory and lore to build ongoing. Long term campaigns. In 5e you can expect roughly a combat a session, sometimes more, sometimes less if players are really enjoying roleplay portions. I am not one to cut roleplay short because there hasn't been "enough" combat recently. In Fabula Ultima I lean into roleplay heavily, allowing encounters to be meaningful and story driven.

I deal with rules issues by...

Doing a quick rules check, if it takes more than 90 seconds to check, I will run with my rule for the time being, and confirm after the session and communicate with players for the rule moving forward.

My games focus on...

Story! I love weaving a story that involves a mix of roleplay, combat, and creative solutions!

When it comes to voices

I love to try my hand at varying voices. Not saying I'm good at it, just that I try to be!

Myka Laba's ideal table

A table that enjoys lore, and will make a world fitting character based on the lore I provide! Ones that want me to bring in their backstory, and don't mind some occasional heavy themes, but where hope prevails. Overall the general vibe is just "Be a Hero, have fun" My goal is for people to walk away from my table going "Is it time for the next session yet? I can't wait!" Players that aren't afraid to try new things, be their quirky selves, and respect everyone at the table, from GM to Player and back again, will thrive at my table.

I think metagaming...

Should be avoided whenever possible. It ruins the spirit of the game, and can ruin the experience at a table where not everyone has the same metagame knowledge.

I think min/maxing...

Can be very annoying unless everyone at the table is doing it together. It makes balancing for a partially min/maxed party a nightmare, and rarely lends itself to fun storytelling, but I also understand the idea that "Big numbers make brain go Brrr!"
