About Isak

Hi! I have been gamemastering professionally for two years under the YMCA and want to start striking out on my own. I have a background in game design and creative writing which I pursued in college. I have run multiple long term campaigns to completion, creating my own settings and stories across multiple systems.

I became a GM because

At first it was because nobody else wanted to do it but as I ran games I fell in love with the collaborative process. I like making stories and seeing what they become when players introduce their own story (characters). I also really like coming up with characters and scenarios.

My favorite shows/movies are

Over the garden wall, Galavant & The nightmare before Christmas. I'm a sucker for good soundtracks.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Invested, fair, & funny

How Isak runs games

To me collaborative storytelling and roleplay is king, even in more crunchy and combat heavy systems its important to me that there is narrative pushing all the action forward. To this end I love collaborating with my players so their characters have stakes in the story and create new elements that further shape the story. How heavy combat is. is dependent on the system and the story being told.

Rules are...

Structurally important but not unchangeable should the need arise. I run plenty of games with house rules to improve the experience.

When it comes to voices

I don't have a huge range but I try to make different characters have distinct voices to set them apart from one another.

Isak's ideal table

I love it when not only I'm a fan of my players but my players are fans of each other. People who get excited when their party member is having a big moment are always appreciated at my table. Not only wanting to tell your story but also wanting to hear the other players story and my own, creates my favorite atmosphere to run games in.

I think it's a red flag when players...

Become inactive when the spotlight is not on them.

I think metagaming...

Is to an extent unavoidable but trying to curve it and be true to your character despite your player knowledge is important.

My table is not the place for...

People that aren't okay with potential character death. While lethality varies based on the game and story it's always a risk. Removing death completely from the equation lowers the stakes and thrills.
