About Dan Whills It
Do you crave dark fantasy, and gritty science fiction? Do you want to dream of carving your mark across a living world inspired by Malazan, A Song of Ice and Fire, The Elder Scrolls, and Fire Emblem: Three Houses? Are you looking for tactical combat, meaningful player choice, and cinematic roleplay with real stakes? Then you’re in the right place. First of all, thank you for taking the time to check out my table. My name is Daniel, and I’m a creative writing major with over 10 years of Game Master experience and a background in semi-professional voice acting. Storytelling has always been one of my greatest passions, and few things excite me more than building unforgettable adventures alongside a group of players who are just as excited as I am about telling an meaningful story. I first discovered tabletop RPGs back in college through a close friend, and immediately fell in love with the blend of collaborative storytelling, strategy, performance, and worldbuilding they offered. Within a month, I became the forever DM for my group, and I’ve been running games ever since. I have taught the game to at least 20 of my own friends and strangers over the years, so if you have even a remote interest in the hobby, I'd be happy to guide you along! As a Game Master, I focus heavily on immersive, reactive storytelling. My worlds are built to feel alive. Every NPC has their own goals, beliefs, fears, and history. The world existed before your characters arrived, and its denizens will continue fighting long after they leave. I aim to strike a strong balance between top class cinematic storytelling, challenging tactical combat, meaningful roleplay, and player freedom. To me, combat facilitates engagement with your character and their sheet, and allows for another layer of roleplay and narrative immersion. As such, I try to present a challenge that feels realistic to the stakes of the story at hand. I look to challenge, not to kill my party, but sometimes combat CAN be lethal! I reward creativity, ambition, and out-of-the-box thinking just as much as careful planning and mechanical mastery. Whether you want political intrigue, desperate battles, emotional character arcs, or morally gray decision-making, I want your story to feel personal and alive. At my table, player agency comes first. I aim to present a living world that reacts to the decisions you make within it. Whether we're playing in Pthurelia or Star Wars, Every action you take carries a ripple that affects nearly a dozen detailed in-game factions. I run both a weekly "ANDOR" inspired Star Wars adventure, as well a gritty, ASOIAF-esque homebrew adventure. If any of this interests you, I'd be happy to be your DM or take any questions! I'm looking forward to meeting you!

When I'm not running games I'm...
Chipping away at my novel, hiking with my pup, working my day job, or finding inspiration for my work out in the world! ...and occasionally a little bed rotting.
How Dan Whills It runs games
Realistic, high stakes, cinematic. As a DM, I'm obsessed with maintaining a strong suspension of disbelief in my games. It's my job to immerse you in a world and a narrative. To do so, you need to be engaged, interested and challenged. In other words, I believe that high stakes combat, strong roleplay (every NPC has a voice and a story!) and realistic world-building are imperative to running a great d&d game. The setting I present to my players is a rich tapestry inspired by the worlds I grew up on, as well as stories from history and contemporary media that inspire me. My NPC's have ambitions, goals and regrets. I allow one instance of "rule of cool" per session, but in general, I will make sure that whatever number the dice land on, the final outcome is a compelling one.

If my games were Movies they'd be directed by...
My games tend to initially start in the same ways as George Lucas likes to start his movies— in the middle of things with high stakes. The exposition comes along the way from the characters. Eventually they hit a mix between Tim Burton, Chistopher Nolan / Sam Raimi films.
My games focus on...
COMBAT: *** ROLEPLAY AND NARRATIVE: **** EXPLORATION AND PUZZLE SOLVING: **
When it comes to voices
I roleplay in the first person (with a voice) for every major NPC and many of the minor ones. Using an addon for music in discord, I want you to feel as immerse in the world as your headphones can allow!
Dan Whills It's ideal table
My table is friendly, open minded, but serious about our fun! I aim for a respectful, cinematic vibe that waxes and wanes between laughing and having fun, engaging with the game system, and roleplaying within the world we're crafting around us.

I love it when a player
Provides me with an "alley-oop" or a "yes, and". We're telling a collaborative story, so feel free to inject narrative into the world wherever you can, like suddenly "remembering" a time you and an NPC from your backstory visited a tavern we happen across during a session.
