About Flip Velez

Tabletop games has been a hobby of mine for more than 10 years. I was introduced to it through a bunch of different systems other than DnD. However, since DnD was the most popular at the time, I was able to expand my reach and play with many other players. Still, I find myself deep in my roots for less crunchy systems. In the end, though, I find that I love player interactions and their reactions to situations the most. I like to laugh in absurdity, as most of the things we do are absurd. And absurdity is always good, as it lets us stretch and grasp at our imaginations, making life more colorful. Each of us will have a unique way of viewing and handling interactions and situations. Because of this, I get to learn more about the mysteries of being a person, and I love that. Overall, I love a chill, fun time. I'll be a nervous wreck half the time but at least I'll have fun.

I got started GMing...

when a person told me I'd be good at it. I still don't think I'm good at it, but maybe I'll get to the point when I convince myself otherwise someday.

When I'm not running games I'm...

playing games, mostly. I love survival crafters and isometric ARPGs with robust skill trees. In the off chance I get to play a board game, I would love to have a session of A Feast for Odin, even if it takes 4 hours.

How Flip Velez runs games

Fun comes first. As much as I craft settings and stories, I find that players often go off the beaten path. I don't find this annoying or try to urge them back in line because I've always thought that if this is what they want to do, then let's do it with style. I love a good managed chaos! I love roleplay and prefer it over overly technical scenarios and situations. I won't shy away from these situations as, in the end, that might be something that my players prefer. However, I tend to focus on character links and drives and use that as the brunt of storytelling. I prefer to keep rolls to a minimum in my games, often focusing on party motivations and goals. I dislike wasted rolls and often go for a fail-forward approach. I find that this leads to more interesting plot points rather than bashing our heads against tables, wondering why nobody has been able to open a door. I would be lying if I told someone I knew all the rules for every game I run. And I do try my best to learn as much as I can. However, I feel like rules come second to a great story that we tell together. If we can agree on how to interpret a rule, then let's run with it and carry on. Claiming intent is better than stating which roll you want to make, since it fits my GM-ing style better. While sitting at my table, we'd laugh at a horribly human conversation at the campfire right outside a dragon's cave, readying ourselves for an epic battle.

I deal with rules issues by...

asking the players if they are all okay with agreeing on how a certain rule is interpreted. I'm completely fine with adjusting and breaking the rules.

Rules are...

a language so that we can share imagination. We all have slang for it, and that's completely fine. It's fine to break and make new rules now and then.

When it comes to voices

I'm not great at them, but I do like to try! I don't expect players to do voices with me.

Flip Velez's ideal table

My ideal table consists of players who respect each other. That's the single most important part. While I don't expect my players to role-play heavily, I appreciate any effort in that regard. I do like to joke around at times, so I love playing with players who can share those moments with me.

Featured Prompts

I am for a vibe that's...

chill, respectful, and in for any wild ride the players are game for.

I love it when a player

does something absurd! I can't say that I appreciate it all the time but during moments that call for absurdity, it's wonderful.

My table is not the place for...

talking over other players, ignoring their intentions, and disregarding previously agreed-upon terms.
