About Jon "HobbitGuy" P

I'm an avid player, GM, and game designer, as well as a recovering theater major (you never *really* recover...). I've been playing TTRPGs since my college years, and unlike many, my introduction to RPGs was through the World of Darkness and Chronicles of Darkness games, not through DnD. In my day job, I work with children as a party entertainer - and over the holidays, I roleplay as a Jolly Old Elf. Yes, that means I'm a professional Santa Claus. I'm very much a story- and character-forward RPer, and the games I run tend to reflect that. I also tend toward one-shots rather than extended campaigns, these days, to better suit my current capacity - though that may change in the future! Finally, I've created two game systems, ShenaniGoblins and Murder of Crows. Currently I'm primarily planning to run games in these systems, although again that may change. Yes, I do the voices.

I became a GM because

I'm an absolute *addict* to stories, and the collaborative storytelling of TTRPGs is like nothing else I've ever gotten. Gotta get my fix, man!

My favorite system of all Time is

This week? I'm very much enjoying the Powered by the Apocalypse systems (especially the Masks game my own GM is running for us). I love the setting and themes of Changeling: the Lost enough to have tattooed its logo onto my forearm, though!

When I'm not running games I'm...

Professionally entertaining children as a balloon twister and Santa Claus, or working on designing more TTRPGs myself.

How Jon "HobbitGuy" P runs games

As a narrative addict, I love crafting great stories with my players and giving their characters moments in which to shine! There's a strong improv influence in my GMing, and I'm fond of seeing how the characters' actions change the world - and how the world changes the characters. Right now, I'm focusing on one-shot games, but that might change as things develop.

Featured Prompts

My games focus on...

Setting an open-ended goal in front of the PCs and seeing what story results while they work toward it.

Rules are...

supposed to help players (including the GM) stay on the same page, have a good time, and tell a good story. Any rule that supports those three guidelines should stay. Any rule that doesn't should go.

When it comes to voices

I love doing character voices and enjoy players who can do the same, but I absolutely don't look down on anyone who doesn't have that skill. We're not all Matt Mercer or Brennan Lee Mulligan.

Jon "HobbitGuy" P's ideal table

I thrive with creative players who aren't afraid to take the big swings, and who are willing to invest themselves into the genre of the game for the purposes of crafting a good story. As you may have noticed, I'm more of a storytelling gamer and GM than a wargaming, "craft a challenge for your players to overcome" style. I try to keep things fairly casual at the table, especially before and after the actual RP has started, but I prefer to minimize tabletalk if possible.

I love it when a player

Makes suggestions about the setting and the world. Actively engaging with the setting and the characters within it in a creative way are a major plus, too!

My perfect party mix is

Another GM, a trained improv actor, a standup comedian, and a professional author.

My table is not the place for...

Murderhobos. No disrespect meant - your way of gaming isn't *wrong,* it's just wrong for *me.*
