About Lauri

AS A PERSON? I am a professional actor from Finland, a university-certified nerd, a life-long gamer and an undeniable geek. I'm a dog person, film-maker, collaborator and I enjoy long conversations in the dead of night while staring at the beautiful star-lit sky (or more often, my less-beautiful, not-at-all-star-lit ceiling). AS A GAME MASTER? I have been GM'ing games for a little over 2 years now and playing dnd for almost 5 years, dnd 5e having been the very first edition I ever played, so still relatively fresh and enthusiastic about this wonderful community. MY MAIN STRENGHTS are in story-focused games where roleplaying and combat are in focus, the NPC's have a variety of voices from weirdly goofy to harsh and dark, and equally tragic backstories. I love to put the player's characters and their backstories to the front and centre, in both heartwarming and grim ways. I MAKE MY OWN MAPS AND DESIGN HOMEBREW GAMES in hopes of giving you a chance to play something you've never played before. I bring my skills and knowledge as an actor and a writer to the forefront in order to give you the best experience that I can. WHAT KIND OF GAMES AND STORIES DO I LIKE TO RUN? I like morally grey decisions, goofy and weird situations, and using the game to explore variety of topics. I like to focus on decisions, role play and combat, with occasional puzzle here and there. At one moment you are healed by a joyfully singing cupcake dancing atop your head, while a moment later death comes to collect your siblings because they pissed of an elder god or sold her soul to a devil. Whether you are looking for a lighthearted escapist fantasy, a dark story where you are the only light and hope, confronting what it means to be alive or a combination of all, I might have just the game for you.

My favorite books are

...going to be burning on a pile of lost wisdom if the world keeps turning more and more into what I'd imagine a real world version of Tiamat's cult would look like. Let's add some more hope and kindness there, shall we?

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

funny, weird, kind.

When I'm not running games I'm...

...planning games, playing games, thinking about pondering about planning games, immersing myself into other fantasy worlds, watching Stranger Things finale, doing yet another Baldur's Gate 3 run, or working on some film or play, endlessly letting all kinds of worlds collide in a swirl of stories.

How Lauri runs games

I like to play games where the story is the king, roleplaying is highly encouraged and rewarded, the player's characters have a big impact on the world, their backstories will appear and shape the bigger story arc and choices matter and have interesting consequences. I love running combat, but I often offer solutions to prevent it before it happens or stop the combat mid-swing. I bring my skills and experiences as an actor, writer and a gamer to the forefront and try to make the best use of them so my players have the best experience I can offer them. I like to explore darker and more mature themes, like overcoming abuse, or being a grief-struck hero, falling into darkness or overcoming past mistakes. On the other hand I like to make my payers feel hope, grow into powerful heroes, find weird and whimsicle places with odd and wonderful situations, and make them feel like they and their choices matter and shape the world around them - which is something many of us don't often get to feel in our day-to-day lives. So whether you are into one or - even better - both, I've got you covered. And I ALWAYS WANT TO DISCUSS WITH PLAYERS BEFOREHAND what they are interested in, what they want to see and what they do not want to see in the campaign. I WRITE AND DESIGN MOST OF MY OWN STORIES AND CAMPAIGNS AND ENCOUNTERS but I am more than happy to also run PRE-WRITTEN CAMPAIGNS AS WELL. Like... Curse Of Strahd for example. The most imporant part is that the players hace a game they enjoy.

Lauri's ideal table

The ideal table is a table where everyone has a good time. But a best version of that table is...as far as I can imagine it, is a perfect marriage between deeply thought and well immersed character stories told throughout moments of roleplay, combined with challenging combat and absolutely bananas dice rolling shenanigans.

I am for a vibe that's...

a combination of weird and goofy comedy, dark drama between the player characters and cosmic horror.

I love it when a player

...wants to get immersed and to roleplay. I also love it when they want to test out their character's limits in combat, when they initiate discussions, want to learn and become better at the game, or when they try to make sure everyone is having as good time as they are at the table.

I think it's a red flag when players...

...are not interested in each other's characters or collaborating with one another. Collaboration is the key and party is as strong as the links they form.
