About Kelly

Hi! I've played RPGs since the mid-90's and love the many ways these games manifest - beer and pretzel dungeons crawls, sprawling epics, DRAH-MAH - I love it all. Forever DM, ready to bring my love for these games to others. My favorite RPGs are Classic White Wolf, Deadlands, Exalted, and D&D. I like to run modules as well as sandbox and anything in between. I prefer if my players are knowledgeable in the system and setting but aren't savage lore/mechanics nerds, but if there are players who are new to either it is also fun to share these with folks who have never experienced either. In the real world I am a musician and educator.

How Kelly runs games

I prefer my stories to follow a theme, but I'm not strict on what the theme(s) should be, so session zero is vital. Session zero will include things like checking consent, asking for triggers (we should all feel safe while playing characters doing dangerous things) and seeing what kind of atmosphere it will be. Content of my games usually wind up being that I have a Thing That Is Going Bad in the world, and try to keep folks on that path by reminding them about The Thing, but also leave room for Bottle Episodes or Beach Episodes once in a while. If players want to avoid The Thing, which is always described in session zero, they should expect that The Thing will GO BAD. On a scale of 1-10, 1 being "Always rule of cool" and 10 being "Always rules as written" I think I'm about a 6. I use house/table rules often, but if we decide to play D&D then let's not abuse the system to have a peasant railgun, but also we're here to defeat dragons and take their loot, so we can have some fun. Lots of systems are rules light (like 7th Sea's most recent incarnation) but still use a system for how a scene can play out - pick the game for the style you want to play.
