About Joost

Hello! My name is Joost, and my favourite thing in the world is introducing new players to the awesome world of Dungeons & Dragons. When I started playing D&D over 8 years ago, I had a lot of trouble finding an online group that had the patience to help a new player get to grips with the game. However, after I found a group of like minded people who also just wanted to try something new, I found a hobby that has brought me more joy than anything else. So if you're a new player, you can rest assured that this is a safe environment to dip your toes in the waters of D&D! My style of DMing focuses on Player Agency and Enjoyment, which to me, means finding what about D&D interests a player, and giving them the opportunity to explore it. I love involving player backstories into the adventure, or working with players to create a satisfying story arc, or even just a fun and powerful build. I'm a big proponent of the idea that the Dungeon Master is there to work WITH you, not against you. I love creating new stories, and can't wait to help you tell yours! Lastly, it is important to me that my table is a space for anyone to enjoy themselves and be themselves, and I put a lot of care into making sure it remains a safe space for everyone. I owe so much to this game, it is where I made life-long memories, life-long friends, and it is even where I met my life-long partner. If I can impart just a small piece of this enjoyment to you and your party, I will be a very happy man.

How Joost runs games

I consider my GM Style to be player-centered. My goal is to feel like you've told YOUR story by the end of the campaign, not just mine. To accomplish this, I put a lot of focus on helping everyone craft a character that WANTS something, be it fame, glory, revenge, or just to prove themselves to a demanding parent. This way, even if you are an inexperienced role-player, you always have a solid motivation to fall back on. During sessions, I love presenting my players with encounters that don't have just 1 solution. Combat is often not the only way to solve problems, and roleplay and puzzles are often featured. I also put a large emphasis on player choice. You and your parties decisions are what shapes the story and the world around you, for better or worse. You might choose to spare a nasty villain, potentially turning them into an ally, or perhaps you choose to claim the Evil Sword of Domination, forever binding your soul to it in return for long forgotten magic... However, this does not mean that I don't LOVE a good combat. Clobbering Goblins and incinerating Mindflayers are some of my favourite D&D memories. I enjoy tactical combat where the monsters know what they are doing, but I often adjust the difficulty of the combat based on what my players are looking for (which is something we will discuss before the start of the campaign, so that there are no surprises). In short, my GM style adjusts to YOUR needs, so that we can all work together to tell YOUR party's story.
