About Rachel

Hi my name is Rachel. I have been DMing for six years. D&D is my hyperfixation and I wouldn't have it any other way. Although my bank account struggles to handle all the independent content creators and Kickstarters I support. So that's why I'm here. Why not let my D&D passion pay for my D&D addiction. That's healthy right. In all seriousness, I'm not a module DM. I have created an open sandbox world where anything goes. I like to let my players lead the game. I have overarching storylines that will tie together narratives and provide context for players to work from.

My favorite books are

Anything by Sir Terry Pratchett Persuasion by Jane Austen And The Ass Saw The Angel by Nick Cave The Monster's Know What They Are Doing by Kieth Amman Also any non-fiction books about Ancient History, Dinosaurs, Space, Weaponry, Nature, Medicine or Dungeons and Dragons.

My favorite shows/movies are

The Fifth Element by Luc Besson Cyrano by Joe Wright Hot Fuzz by Edgar Wright I love anime, Studio Ghibli and asian dramas. I love thrillers like the Danish films about Department Q. I watch films in their original languages because I feel you often lose inflection and meaning through dubbing.

People are always surprised when I tell them

I am a black belt in Japanese Ju Jitsu. I also love sparring and weightlifting.

How Rachel runs games

I am a freestyle DM and so make things up as I go along. Didn't know that NPC was a the head of a secret society? Neither did I until 5 minutes ago. My games are roleplay heavy, character driven storylines in an open sandbox. You can also bring any kind of character to the game and I can make it work. I also encourage in game crafting and have many game resources I have written if you like immersive homebrew worlds. My world has spelljammer elements, magic academies, secret societies and more businesses than you can poke a stick at. Whatever you want to do if it has a logical motivation can be done. I also run a debreif session at the end of every game so I get feedback from players regularly.

I deal with rules issues by...

Considering the context and spirit of the rules. Rule of cool applies and also if I'm not sure on a rule outcome I'll often let the party decide collectively. I like to give players as much agency as possible so long as it doesn't impinge on the enjoyment of the other players.

I once ran a session...

Where PC was hit with a poison lance as was the woman he loved. They tracked down, avenged his dead brother (who was transformed into a Tupilaq by a lich) She died in battle. During the lair escape (many zombies) carried his brothers corpse out, collapsed and died in the arms of his friends. PC Dead

When it comes to voices

I will always give voices a go to try and bring a level of distinction to charcaters.

Rachel's ideal table

Free spirited, creative, there for a laugh, versatile. Keen to roleplay. Good at giving constructive feedback. Doesn't feel the need to rules lawyer too often and is ok with me Rule of Cooling it and using house rules to give inspiration a bit more scope. If you have the willingness to get a little silly, but also the flexibility to mesh and make concessions so your charcater integrates into the party we'll have a great time.

I love it when a player

Brings me lore. A solid backstory with a place in mind works great. You can be from anywhere. Make sure your character has had a life. Even childhood friends, crushes, family, hobbies, foibles. There is nothing harder than a party of gruff silent types who want to be emo and 'mysterious'.

I think min/maxing...

Isn't a problem. Min/Max'd charcaters balance out in other ways. If you have main charcater syndrome however and can't share the stage with others then we'll be having a chat about what Collaborative Roleplay looks like.
