About Clay

Howdy! I'm the co-founder and lead designer at Nat Two Press, creators of Rainsporest Odyssey 5e! Our book is in a great state, but we always need more playtesting, and I always need more playtesters! I'm a lighthearted, boss-fight loving DM. A good references for my style also describes Rainsporest Odyssey; The heroes of Ghibli, the villains of Elden Ring, and the world of BotW. I believe strongly that the players are the main characters, and that you must love those characters to be a great DM. That being said, playtesting means i sometimes have to hold back on turning a fun scene into 2 sessions of sidetracked roleplay. We've gotta make sure our adventure works well in all scenarios! If you want to see behind the scenes of professional design, love magical worlds inspired heavily by real world biology, or dream of fighting mechanically deep and lore-rich boss monsters, you're in the right place!

I became a GM because

It's one of the most accessible forms of creative expression out there, and I learned how important that expression is!

My favorite books are

Golden Compass trilogy, Three Body Problem trilogy, Lord of the Rings trilogy, I guess i just really like trilogies!

When I'm not running games I'm...

Cooking meals for my friends that have graciously taken over GM duties in the friendgroup while I finish up my kickstarter. (Or playing mtg, roguelikes, soulslikes, pokemon romhacks, etc.)

How Clay runs games

I'm a lighthearted, boss-fight loving DM. A good references for my style also describes Rainsporest Odyssey; The heroes of Ghibli, the villains of Elden Ring, and the world of BotW. I often craft completely soundtracks for my campaigns. I love side conversations to plan out the moments my players want. I avoid railroads, and litter my worlds with dozens upon dozens of optional, miss-able moments. Every experience should be different! I am a fan of weird player ideas! Come up with a better plan than the npc gave you? Have an idea that requires liberal (but defendable) interpretation of a spell? Duct-taped 3 unlike magic items together, hoping it's just crazy enough to work? You're my type of player!

Spending two years writing a full hardcover adventure... woops!

My favorite trope is...

HEISTS! A heist is the natural evolution of dungeon design, and provides a fantastic idea space for playing with the toys that a system gives you.

Rules are...

Like sauces. You shouldn't be forced to use them all at once, but its hard to find a great meal that ignores all of them.
