About Dylan Wolfgang

My name is Dylan Wolfgang Hughes, but most people online call me AXBY(aks-bee). I grew up a massive fan of all things fantasy and when I was about 6 or 7, I found my very first D&D Monster Manual in my local bookstore and fell in love. I scrounged together every bit of allowance I had and brought it right to the front counter so I could take it home and just gawk at the amazing art and intricate lore inside. It'd be nearly a decade before I ever found a table to actually play but then again, I never had StartPlaying! I played for a number of years before I had taken enough notes to feel confident enough to run my own session. I'm sure it was a disjointed mess as I learned the nuances of GMing on the fly but I was determined to hone my talents. Like many others, I would come to be inspired by the mastery of the craft displayed by big names like Brennan Lee Mulligan, Matt Mercer, and many others. After years of DMing D&D 5e games and lots of feedback from all my amazing players, I've managed to develop a unique style of my own that emphasizes illustrative cinematic narration of settings, gritty descriptions of combat and action "choreography", and recognizably varied character role playing. Additionally I take great pride in my content writing whether it be my fully original settings or simply going the extra mile alongside my table to help create player characters that truly feel like they belong to the world they inhabit. Hope to see you at the table soon! Cheers!

People are always surprised when I tell them

As a pretty avid consumer of all things fantasy, most of my acquaintances in that circle are surprised to hear that I play rugby. Alternatively, most friends/teammates in the rugby world are pretty surprised to learn I'm heavily into Dungeons & Dragons.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Put out a post to some of my current players and they said... "1.) Adaptive (adjusts quickly to the narrative players act out) 2.) Multi-Character Acting (plays out different NPC accents / moods) 3.)Creative (builds their own storyline / lore that works within existing worlds.)"

How Dylan Wolfgang runs games

- We're here to have fun, so I'm all about reading my table's 'vibes'. We laugh, we cry, we lock in and have an intense battle against the endless hordes of an insidious lich king bent on world domination. Y'know... casual. - I think the most compelling fights happen when the players have a good reason for it, so roleplaying and storytelling often take the lead over combat at about a 60/40 ratio. - My personal bread and butter is Dark Fantasy, where fantastical characters and settings are flavored with some very relatable "humanity" and grit. Having said that I have a huge love of true High Fantasy as well and certainly don't shy away from those settings. - I believe that good character creation is what makes a good campaign great. One of my favorite parts of DMing is collaborating with my players to create PCs that feel like they're a part of the world. I won't hesitate to play around with entire elements of a campaign in order to interweave the PCs origins into the setting.

If my games were Movies they'd be directed by...

Guy Ritchie- Thoughtful action sequences, gritty worlds, memorable characters, but also never afraid to dip into some ridiculous (even silly) self-aware humor.

When it comes to voices

I have a good array of voices/accents and am able to utilize those to flow between various characters in a scene; 1) For the Flavor, and 2) So there's rarely any confusion as to who is currently speaking.
