About Bill

I’m Bill, an experienced Game Master now living in Australia. I’ve been Fantasy Role Playing since 1982, and GM-ing for most of that time. I’ve played in a range of different Game Systems, coming back to D&D with version 5e, when I started running Adventurers League sessions at our game store. I’m currently working in D&D 2024 rules using Foundry VTT and Discord. I create graphics-rich sandbox game modules set in the western Forgotten Realms, focusing on heroic fantasy with a mix of exploration, role-play, and combats major and minor.

I became a GM because

Back then we didn’t know anyone who played TTRPGs, so we bought the book and taught ourselves. That curiosity became a passion for guiding shared storytelling, problem-solving, and adventure as the GM. I found mythic monsters and dark labyrinths within me, and I still explore them today.

My favorite shows/movies are

Lord of the Rings Extended Edition series — The road goes ever onwards. I enjoyed Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Designing our next adventure: painting battle-maps, creating outlandish items and fearsome foes to fuel the imagination, and coding Foundry VTT plugins that allow me to stay in the moment and focus on the story as it unfolds.

How Bill runs games

For me, storytelling is a cooperative undertaking. I construct modules with locations, NPCs, and a basic story idea, but what happens from there very much depends on what the players choose to do. Character backstories add depth and opportunities, and I make sure that every player has opportunities to develop their part in the story. In my games, character decisions have consequences — the messes they make may become elements in other campaigns! Each week builds on ideas and actions from previous sessions until we bring the module’s primary storyline to a satisfactory close. One of the things that I enjoy most is crafting unique items to suit each character.

Bill's ideal table

Players at my table understand that this is a cooperative undertaking focussed on having fun and enjoying a shared experience. They want their characters to become heroes and 'save the world', but understand that everyone else is there to do the same.

I am for a vibe that's...

funny, cooperative, heroic, fun.

I love it when a player

has a great idea, rolls with the dice and comes up with a solution that everyone at the table builds into a great story moment.

I think min/maxing...

is fine, but players need to incorporate the resulting features and flaws into their 'hero in the making' in interesting and story-rich ways.
