About Edgar

Hello friend. My name is Edgar I'm a storyteller, writer and artist with just about ten years of GM experience. It all began when I was a wee lad and got invited to game of, would you believe it, Dungeons and Dragons. I fell in love with tabletop roleplay right then and there, seeing it as collaborative art and storytelling. At my table we are inclusive, welcoming and attentive. I've run many systems in my time and played around with a bunch of themes. If I had to pick favorites, I'd go with mystery and horror, so even if we're doing wacky hijinks in Faerûn, I am liable to throw in a puzzle or a scare. While the rules of the system are an important framework, I believe that the 'rule of cool' is a universally excellent rule. As a GM my loyalty is to the story that we are all creating together, with all the curveballs and out-of-the-box chicanery players are oft to do.

I became a GM because

of the romantic idea of gathering around a campfire and sharing stories. TTRPG's for me are a great way to tell a story and unlike most other mediums, it's collaborative.

My favorite books are

For Whom the Bell Tolls, House of Leaves, A Song of Ice and Fire series (A Feast for Crows in particular).

When I'm not running games I'm...

Writing, reading, designing, watching tv/movies or playing games. That covers just about anything, but I enjoy either being creative or immersing myself in other stories and worlds.

How Edgar runs games

I am most interested in the storytelling aspects of the game. I put focus on roleplay and character engagement with the story. I like to get the player characters embedded in the story, make them feel like a part of the world and help the players feel likewise. I am fond of mysteries and strangeness; things that make my players think and engage with the story by questioning things. I like to do voices to make my characters stand out and be more memorable, and sometimes just for fun. When it comes to combat, I always try to make it engaging narratively and not simply a numbers game. I enjoy crafting combat encounters that are high-stakes and like rollercoasters, with twists and turns, ups and downs.

If my games were Movies they'd be directed by...

a weird mix of David Fincher and David Lynch.

Rules are...

Guidelines. Very helpful guidelines, but guidelines nonetheless. They are there to facilitate fun and a good experience.

When it comes to voices

I find that voices help me and the players to differentiate characters and add color to them. I also just like doing voices when I'm preparing for sessions, which I'm told is concerning and annoying.

Edgar's ideal table

My table is respectful and attentive. We are here to play cool characters and experience fun stories.

I love it when a player

Surprises me. TTRPG's are fantastic for collaborative storytelling and when a player thinks outside the box or makes a bold character driven decision to take the story in a new direction, I find that wonderful.

My table is not the place for...

Bigotry or disrespect. Be kind to each other.
