I got started GMing...
...right before COVID hit. I had never played a TTRPG before, but had always wanted to play one. I ended up finding enough people join in a game, but they had never played either, so we learned together. It was a great time, then...I got to figure out how to move us online!
My favorite books are
Fantasy and Sci-Fi. I love the Jim Butcher Series "The Dresden Files", Brandon Sanderson "Stormlight Archives" and R.A. Salvatore Drizzt novels.
When I'm not running games I'm...
With my family, working on my book, or outside doing something active. I love to hike, forage, and be on the river.
How Garth Minnick runs games
Voices, as well as engaging RP situations. I also love to throw down a deadly encounter that pushes the party to the limit. I am pretty loose with magic items, but you often find them after they have unleashed their power on the party. You pick up lots of loot after battles :). Combat is crunchy enough to keep things balanced. The rules are there, but creative uses that fit within the description of the feature or spell are welcome. Rule of Cool often comes to bear at my table.

I once ran a session...
Where the party tried to rob an ancient dwarven tomb. They ended up locked in a room with an Iron Golem at level 3 (party of 6). They decided to fight. The last party member standing had 5HP and no healing. They medicine checked well stabilizing the party then waited 8hrs for the cleric to pop up.
Rules are...
there to shape the game and give us a playing field. We should follow the rules unless there is a good case to be made that they are silly in a current circumstance. I play 5e, and I understand the shortcomings, but they do serve a purpose in most cases.
When it comes to voices
I try to give notable NPC voices. In once campaign that meant that all the Sea Elves spoke with backwoods voices as their culture was isolated. One of the party's favorite NPC's was a Sea Elf named Oceanus who ran a distillery below deck and almost blew burned the ship down more than once.
Garth Minnick's ideal table
I strive for a general vibe at the table of fun. Simple and pure fun. We have some dramatic moments when it feels appropriate, and the table is into that kind of RP. When the table like to joke, laugh, and smash enemies...we do that. I enjoy many different types of play, and love to adapt to what my table likes/doesn't like.

I love it when a player
Comes up with a solution or an angle on a encounter I hadn't imagined. It makes me so happy to see someone thwart a difficult puzzle with a witty and clever solution.
I think it's a red flag when players...
go after other players for not knowing a rule or how something works in the game. There is no reason to take fun away from someone else. I will keep the lines of what is appropriate and what is not, and I expect my players to let me know if there is an issue I have missed and I will address it.
My table is not the place for...
People looking for extremely dark stories. I am happy to make things tense and create characters that are unlikable for you to struggle against, but I am not going to create a completely bleak and dark story, even if the situation the party is going through might be bleak.
