About Ross Wickings

I have been a player and GM for a few years now, having run over 100 sessions already and played in over 200. I've written and published through DriveThruRPG a D&D 5e compatible campaign book, 'A Deadly Quest'. I have played D&D 5e, Starfinder 1e, Alien RPG, Candela Obscura, Everyday Heroes, Marvel Multiverse TTRPG, Walking Dead RPG. Looking to diversify my understanding of different systems and how they work. As a GM I have predominantly run D&D 5e sessions, although have recently started GMing Candela Obscura and am planning to run Alien RPG sessions soon. As a GM I focus on player safety and their ability to direct and influence the story. I use safety tools which are talked through in session 0. these include lines & veils, x-cards, an open table and post-session debrief. I can run sessions for new and experienced players, I like to introduce people to ttrpgs in a supportive and calm way. Whilst at the same time having compelling adventures for experienced players too, so they don't get bored. I like to use maps and music wherever that's appropriate, although I can use theatre of the mind for those systems that are more suitable. I create handouts for the players to try and truly immerse them in the experience. Most importantly I like to have fun and want everyone to leave a session having got invested in their character and the story.

I became a GM because

I have always enjoyed storytelling and creating things. Finding a way to tell stories with other people and sharing the things I had created seemed like a perfect fit.

How Ross Wickings runs games

I tell intricate stories that will motivate you as a player and get you invested in the world. Whether it is laughing at the silly NPC or hating the BBEG, I focus on working with players to get them invested. My games tend to focus heavily on role-playing, where I provide players with the opportunity to engage with the world. More than willing to make a fool of myself to help others feel comfortable as their character - yes, I do voices but you don't have to! Where a system leans more towards combat, every single one will have a purpose that in some way connects to the player characters or the wider story. Some might seem like a simple fight, but there may be unknown connections and motives behind them - unknown at least until you explore and find out why! I'll work with you for any multi-session campaigns/adventures to create a backstory that ties your character to the world and story. Adapting and adjusting to what works with your character and the story. I added a whole dragon quest to one campaign because the players wanted it! I use spotlighting to give each player the opportunity to explore their character's backstory wherever I can.

Ross Wickings's ideal table

My tables are generally relaxed, suiting players who are new or experienced to ttrpgs as a whole or just certain systems. Players who enjoy throwing themselves into their character will have a great time at my table. I make sure to provide opportunities to do that as well. I like to describe my fantasy tables along the lines of Lord of The Rings meets Monty Python's The Holy Grail. I like to provide serious moments, but they are balanced with humour. I don't take myself too seriously and my games reflect that. If it's more of a horror style game, I still include humour as I think that makes the scarier moments hit even harder.
