About Fabian

I am a Game Developer who have loved ChoseYourOwnAdventures and TTRPGs for as long as I've known. As a kid I was the introverted weird one who played games and spent his free time inbetween class writing and drawing alternatives to how the games I played could go. My father was and is a big fan of TTRPGs and would teach me to play, being the GM for various games. In my teens I began playing online, starting with play-by-post games before becoming annoyed enough at the slow pace to force myself to become extroverted enough to play via voice chat. About two years later I begun DMing which went... poorly for the first year, I had no experience with public speaking and no spine to stand up to pushy players. Eventually I began to grow a spine, in part to beginning my studies in Game Design and learning to become more extroverted, which showed in my Game Master skills. I began finding role models to emulate in GMs like Brennan Lee Mulligan and Matthew Mercer, using tutorials and others experiences to become better at improvising and managing players. Currently I am the primary GM of a six-year old group of online friends ranging between 5-7 active players at any given time and have been running Oneshots and shorter campaigns both on and offline. So who am I? I'm a comedian, a creator, an improviser, a game designer and to quote my players "Our favorite rat-bastard".

I ran my first game...

With minimal prep, overreliant on beginner players taking initiative and stressed out of my mind. My second session after the first one flopped I improvised an adventure based around Indiana Jones, Mistborn and the Infinity Stones saga from the MCU. It went over a lot better.

I started running games because...

I got annoyed with my DM at the time and wanted to indirectly spite him by running a game much better than theirs. I didn't at first, turns out there was a learning curve but now I run games because I love doing it.

My favorite books are

The Mistborn series.

How Fabian runs games

My style of GMing is to plan the beginning - middle and end of a session then prepare to have to improvise and scrap every other plan at the drop of a hat because players are with few exceptions, wild animals who cannot be controlled, just gently (or occasionally harshly) nudged in the "right" direction. I am a big fan of roleplay and when sessions devolve into shenanigans. I like playing personalities against each other and occasionally throwing surprises at my players in form of unconventional puzzles such as having to write Haiku or solve math problems (among other examples) to progress. I try to fit in a combat in each session if it feels natural but will often let it build up to a larger-scale combat that can take up most of a session containing deep tactical combat with a lot of room for creative thinking. My favourite combats are the ones that are unconventional towards the typical fantasy setting. Fighting a Dragon in its lair is fun and all, but what about fighting an evil Ringmaster Clown and his entire zoo and performers in a circus laden with traps? In longer campaigns I'll also try to let each player who wishes to be the star of the show, facing a small adventure related to their past or future.

Fabian's ideal table

My table is a table of friends who are cooperating to have a good time in a fantastical world of varying levels of originality. I prefer to play with experienced players unless I am specifically coaching beginner games, not dismissing newcomers just prefer it when rules don't have to be argued or explained (though admittedly sometimes I too get them wrong). I enjoy improv and through a series of lovable players have gotten quite good at it. I love when players like to roleplay and give me fair challenges by doing or saying something wacky. Players who enjoy playing stupid characters or "Heels" will always have a special place in my heart, I adore it when someone is willing to lift the spirits of the table by saying something dim-witted or pompous. I pride myself on keeping an inclusive and drama-free table, I am part of the LGBTQ with several friends and family in it and will not turn someone away based on race, sex, religion or political beliefs (as long as these beliefs do not prevent you being a decent human being at the table) In my games there will be a script planned you will never see that basically just says "Beginning - Middle - End" with "Improvise" written in between. I don't believe in following modules religiously if that will make it less fun. The same rule applies to actions in-game, if your idea is realistic or plausible according to the rules of the game, lets give it a go shall we?

I think metagaming...

Is kinda lame, You wouldn't you fast forward to the end of a movie, why would you spoil what will happen in the adventure game you're playing?

I think min/maxing...

Is alright if that's more fun for you but personally I believe in the Brandon Sanderson quote that "Flaws makes a more interesting character." A character with bad charisma having to try and bluff their way through a door can be just as entertaining as Mister Suave doing it.

My table is not the place for...

"Hostile" bigotry or racism. If your Elven Paladin is such a bigot they will actively hamper or ignore the Dwarven Fighter, you might not fit in well at my table. If your Elven Paladin and Dwarven Fighter want to have a friendly, consensual, hostile relationship, please go ahead.
