About Aquafish

Hello! I am very enthusiastic about TTRPGS and dnd 5e in specific. I have been playing and GMing games since my first year of highschool and have taught countless players how to play and helped them along their first adventures. I have ran pre-written campaigns, though typically I write my own. I would be happy to GM for you sometime. I proudly support all peoples and the usage of safety tools.

My favorite books are

The Discworld series by Terry Pratchett and Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I am also a huge fan of Manga, Full Metal Alchemist, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, and Magic Knight Rayearth being some of my favourites. I also highly recommend Kings of The Wyld by Nicholas Eames.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Painting Miniatures, Playing video game RPGS, Reading, or watching anime. I also watch a good amount of youtube with some TTRPG focused content.

I got started GMing...

Back while playing 4th edition Dnd. I knew I wanted to write my own stories and build my own dungeons right away and had a good time learning through that process with a group of highschool friends. I never stopped GMing and some of those friends I still game with regularly today!

How Aquafish runs games

I tend to focus on Exploration as well as Storytelling. Combat does come up as needed though the majority of fights are avoidable or you may be able to talk your way out of it. I also have a love of helping player's craft their backstories to fit into the world and to be used actively throughout the game.

Rules are...

important to the system but should never get in the way of the narrative. I would much rather bend or change rules to make things more fun and interesting for players. One example being that I dislike class locked items and prefer to let whichever character could reasonably use them, use them.

I prep by

constantly making notes on my phone and planning encounters and events in my head. I try to wrap my mind around all the places a story could go without trying to plan too many specifics. I prefer instead to have a more flexible approach with some general ideas, locations, npcs, already planned.

I deal with rules issues by...

Taking input from all the players at the table for what makes narrative sense and talking out the various interpretations until we are in agreement. If needed I will put my foot down on a hard line but only when there's clear ambiguity we can't come to a consensus.

Aquafish's ideal table

I tend to run my table with a good amount of humour and try to make sure everyone feels included in the action. I try to let the players make all the decisions they can and let them guide the story where it needs to go. This is of course harder in more constrained scenarios like Oneshots but I do believe letting players make the decisions is the most important part of the game.

I love it when a player

does something unexpected or takes advantage of an option I didn't foresee. Dealing with the antics of players is one of my favourite parts of GMing and I love to improvise or create new rules to deal with the insanity. Players who are active and willing to try out ideas are my favourite to GM for.

I think metagaming...

is inevitable when you have players who are well versed in the game or setting. Creating unique encounters, tweaking stat blocks, and planning different scenarios is the preferred way to deal with metagaming.

I think it's a red flag when players...

try to shove other players out of the spotlight, or spend too much time piloting another players character. It is very important to ensure everyone at the table is having a good time and at times that can involve telling one player to back off or sit out while another is able to shine.
