About Kurt

Hello. My name is Kurt. I was introduced to TTRPGs when I was 13 years old and re-enacted the Lord of the Rings books in DND 2nd Edition. I have been playing and running TTRPGs, on and off, for the past two decades and hope to continue for many more! I have run many different settings, systems, and genres, but my favorites are Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition and Savage Worlds Adventure Edition. My DM strengths are voice acting/accents, balancing combat encounters, scenario setup, character/player inclusion and involvement, using NPCs effectively; keeping track of plots, character mechanics, and NPC mechanics, and making the game feel cinematic. I have run games for a diverse array of players, from complete beginners to veterans with decades of experience. I started off running games in person but switched to online when the Annus horribilis of 2020 struck. I've been playing on Startplaying since 2023 and it's now time to throw my hat in the ring as a DM.

How Kurt runs games

I enjoy a mix of roleplay, tactical combat, socio-political intrigue, exploration, and skill challenges. I'm not a fan at all of puzzles or riddles. I prefer to run challenging combats that matter for the story, but I'm happy to easier random encounters if the players are in the mood. As a kid, I liked imitating the voice actors of the cartoons I watched so I'll be doing voices and accents during my game to help provide an amusing experience with better immersion for the players. I'm also willing to work with my players on their character ideas and actions. Being trustworthy is my moral goal as a DM. I like the rule of cool, but I try to balance it by respecting the rules as an equal priority. I try to honor the source material and provide appropriate period-cultural accuracy, where appropriate, to the game. I consider it a point of pride if my players learn something during my games. My biggest priority though is for ALL of my players to have fun. I like making sure each player has a niche that they can occupy and has a moment to shine. I try to offer something unique to TTRPGs so you're excited to attend my next game!

I love it when a player

Comes up with a great backstory for their character that integrates the lore of the particular world and suggests plot hooks for future sessions. I also enjoy when they add details and growth to their character as the campaign progresses.
