About Capybara
Hi! I’m Capybara, a gamer and TTRPG enthusiast since 1995, with over 20 years of professional experience in writing and game design. I lean heavily toward the roleplaying side of the game, and my main goal as a GM is to set the stage for players to develop and grow their characters, creating truly unforgettable moments at the table. A fierce cultist of the Rule of Cool and the Rulings over Rules faction, I approach combat as something that should always feel meaningful, high-stakes, and cinematic. Currently, I’m running D&D 5e in a Play by Post format, with roleplay heavy takes on Curse of Strahd, Rime of the Frostmaiden, and The Wild Beyond the Witchlight.

How Capybara runs games
I love running games that encourage heavy roleplaying! I tend to run games that prioritize character and immersion, developing the correct atmostphere to engage my players, instead of sticking to rigid RAW encounters. While combat is a fun aspect of the game, especially when the perfect combo between players' skills leads to incredible outcomes, what I love the most is watching those characters slowly grow and develop as the story unfolds, and seeing the players grow into them as they get to know them better with time. I have a knack for the cinematic, the spectacular and the visual impact, prefering Rule of Cool above else. If it's crazy and against all odds, I'll probably allow it! On the other hand, I tend to be very analytic with the encounters I present, either combat, social, or exploration ones. I have a background of 20 years in the video game industry, with 15 of those as a game designer. This has given me an additional outlook to how encounters are created and presented to the players, usually ending up with richer, out of the box experiences that go beyond what the basic rules suggest. Above all, my goal is to make awesome memories out of each adventure, giving you something to remember for years to come!

My games focus on...
Roleplaying interesting characters, both PCs and NPCs. Establishing a compelling vibe for each scene. Building towards a amazing scenes and memorable payoffs.
Rules are...
Guidelines. Useful for structuring play, but shouldn't get in the way of the fun. This doesn't mean I'll ignore the rules to save a character, but if it causes the table to break the dramatic tension to argue about them, we decide on an option and move on. Rulings over rules every day, all day.
Capybara's ideal table
My ideal table consists of players participating in the game sharing and owning the narrative, proposing next story beats for their character and establishing goals for the party as a whole, not trying to "beat the game" as a main objetive. I enjoy my tables when the spirit is more "Lord of the rings" than "Honor among thieves". A few jokes here and there are ok, but I prefer adventure and immersion over fourth wall breaking and self deprecating humor. Overall, I love tables that are collaborative, creative and value narrative fun above mechanics!

I think metagaming...
Can be a bit of fun if you use it to set up narrative beats with other players in advance, instead of just trying to rely on other players build up on your ideas organically.
I think min/maxing...
Can be a hobby in itself! I don't see it as a bad thing for D&D, although some times it can get in the way of an amazing character concept.
My table is not the place for...
People who are interested in playing a string of RAW combat encounters. Nothing wrong with that playstyle, but I'm not the DM for that.
