About Briar - Dungeon Matron
I’m Briar, a writer and artist who turned my passion into a degree in Narrative Artforms at The University of Michigan Stamps School of Art and Design. I’m currently a producer for a live-filmed show, where I write for the live events and storyboard in post-production, turning it into a YouTube TV series. I’m not a dungeon master, I am the Matron of Dungeons I love videogames, art, film, and animation:)

I started running games because...
I'm a director at heart. I love building for my players, letting them shine, and giving them transitions forward so they aren't left to flounder alone.
The three words my players would use to describe me are...
August: Immersive, challenging, and player-driven
When I'm not running games I'm...
I'm writing horror novels<3
How Briar - Dungeon Matron runs games
Dungeon Matron style: I believe in failing forward and consequences not stagnating or delaying the story. I create linear campaigns with many splitting and spirallign branches. The world will not wait for the players, they move at the same pace. If there is a general rule I'll follow it, but I prefer a grounded rule of cool narrative focussed game play when the players are immersed instead of stuck with their heads in their character sheets. I use combat as a plot tool, I find combat for combat sake dull and distracting. I'd rather my players be engaged with a puzzle or toeing the line of a tense social encounter with dangerous consequences. My tone is dark, atmospheric, and unafraid of horror. Recurring themes at my table are: magic that always has consequence, eldritch horror, old gods and buried secrets, spirits and titans, hags, liches, cold wars that are one spark away from eruption, secret societies and guilds, and of course, dragons. For one shots tho? Let's get f****** wild!

Briar - Dungeon Matron's ideal table
My ideal table is inclusive. My ideal table engages with prompts, explores worlds, and isn't afraid to delve deep into the horrors we face together. My table follows rules as a guideline, but we don't fuss about them when they're slowing down the game. An ideal table is flexible to impromptu rule setting that serves the specific scene we're in together. My idea table is here for a good time and devoted to the collective story.

I am for a vibe that's...
respecting and honors eachother's vunerabilities.
I love it when a player
engages with a story element, npc, or environmental aspect in ways I did not expect or plan for.
I think min/maxing...
Is part of how we engage with this storytelling medium. I love it as long as we have a clear idea of the character and it's narratively sound.
