About Ben the DM

Hi! I'm Ben and I love stories. I've been playing D&D for 4 years now and it's one of my greatest joys along with exploring nature, listening to and playing music, spending time with friends, watching movies or building my own lego models, which I have often used for D&D terrain. I've GM'ed two +1 years campaigns, around 5 shorter campaigns and countless one shots, including a game for a high school class I've been invited to run. Most games I GM are high fantasy, though I flirted with western, sci-fi, horror and low-magic settings. I think the most important thing in a TTRPG is the story the players and the GM create together. Their victories, their failures, their epic moments and moments of sharing around the campfire. Just like in real life, it's all about the relationships and the common experience.

I became a GM because

I want to create environments, where people can experience epic moments, various emotions and explore themselves through their characters.

My favorite shows/movies are

The Green Knight, Wind River, LOTR, Arcane, Dune, The Lego Batman movie...

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Excited - I'm thrilled to play new adventures, learn about my players and see their crazy ideas unfold. Caring - I want to provide the best playground for my players. Brutal - when it comes to dangerous enemies, I don't pull punches.

How Ben the DM runs games

My games are mainly focused on the story. Be it the story of fantastical heroes, underdogs trying to survive a hostile world, criminals and their heists, adventurers deep in ancient ruins or found family protecting each other while saving the world from an evil threat. I'm excited to create environments where you can explore your character's motivations, goals, strenghts and weaknesses. Environments where you can be heroic and defeat monsters in tactical yet epic battles. I'm very open to homebrew, I love creative players! I'm good at making fun, challenging and tactical combat, memorable NPCs and yes-anding my players. I'd love to improve in the exploration area of the game, though I've made a few dungeons I'm really proud of. I also focus on balancing comedy with serious tones. My one shots, though mostly set in high fantasy worlds, are very specificaly themed and mostly pretty high stakes. My campaigns on the other hand are tailored to my player's characters and run in a style where the players feel like their story matters. I think the most important things in a TTRPG game are personal stories, thematic lore, memorable NPCs, combat and moments where the player's brilliant ideas shine like the brightest star. So...are you up to discover the adventures ahead of you?

My games focus on...

rich storytelling, epic moments, plot twists, meaningful conversations, decisions and character relationships. A setting can be as cool and rich as possible, but if the players don't feel connected to other characters, the game looses its magic.

Rules are...

just guidelines. If a player wants to do something cool that bends the rules a little, I'll make sure they're able to do that. Rule of cool is the best rule there is.

Ben the DM's ideal table

I love players who are creative, who can take simple ideas and make them interesting.

Featured Prompts

I am for a vibe that's...

a mix of comedy and serious moments. D&D shines the most when you mix funny player shenanigans with drama, tension and high stakes. But however tense a game is, it should always end with hope.

I love it when a player

makes a crazy plan that actualy works. A changeling who shifted into the evil general's wife to lead him away from the city centre before battle? A wizard who had no spell slots left so he sacrifised his magical abilities to cast one last spell to save his friend? Baby I'm in!

My table is not the place for...

heavy drinking, murder-hoboing and sexual themes. Some light, comedic flirting and exploring romantic relationships? Sure! But absolutely no NSFW.
