About Steve

I've played D&D since I was a kid and it was in it's 2nd Edition, but I love the new editions as they come out and have explored all sorts of game systems. I enjoy making detailed worlds as a sandbox for players to explore. I design my own maps and love creating detailed dungeons, cities, and natural spaces. But I’m also a prolific writer and enjoy populating my games with unique NPCs, strange creatures, and above all funny little shops and restaurants. I'm a SAG Eligible actor with over two decades of experience on stage and screen. I've done over a hundred theatrical productions, films, television shows, and commercials. My training includes theater styles like Commedia Dell'Arte, Kabuki, Shakespeare, and Improv with Second City. I'm an experienced comedic performer and you can expect at least one or two fun voices in any session. My academic background is in biology. I've worked in biomedical research, veterinary medicine, and was a Docent at the Los Angeles Zoo. I've got a healthy adoration of nature and ecology that will make its way into almost all of my games. I'll introduce actual zoology and ecology into the setting and will always be glad to dig into the biology behind how the world works. My other professional experience is in the education field. Previously I was a Teaching Artist with Imagination Stage in Bethesda where I taught middle school students storytelling, film production, and puppetry. As a video editor and filmmaker I produced graduate and undergraduate level educational video content for an academic publisher. My films and documentaries have screened at festivals around the country. If you'd like to see me in action as a Dungeon Master here are a few livestreams I did with Perception Studio on twitch: The Werewolves of Carcassonne: https://youtu.be/r0EH7-y8QUY?t=19 Birds of a Feather Heist Together: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeKlfZN0oXI

My favorite shows/movies are

I pull inspiration from Miyazaki (Nausicaa, Ponyo, and Howl’s Moving Castle), Douglas Adams, Shakespeare, Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack, Primal), Steve Irwin, David Attenborough, and Guillermo del Toro. I’m a voracious reader of scientific nonfiction like Stephen Jay Gould, or Paul Stamets

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Whimsical, Exuberant, and Sinister I like playful and exciting adventures, but in the places that there should be darkness and evil I won't shy away from a darker plotline

When I'm not running games I'm...

I'm a professional actor and work in the veterinary field. I've got a fascination with animals and wildlife and a penchant for the stage and screen.

How Steve runs games

Exploration is perhaps one of my favorite aspects of TTRPGs. I have a serious passion for mapmaking and designing them myself lets me create very intentional dungeons, regions, and even coffee shops loaded with details and Easter eggs specific to the adventure and party interests. When it comes to combat, I work to make it streamlined and fast paced. We should feel at a pace with the fight while we play. When I design combats I will usually also create a map specific to the environment and location. I like to give tactical options to players, some of which may be more risky or rewarding than others. I work with my players to determine how difficult they want combat to be and will always encourage a little extra boldness. I think that there is a thrill when death is a possibility. It makes surviving an achievement. High stakes in combat can make it heart pounding and thrilling. As an experienced actor and improviser I lean into both the comedic and more dramatic sides of storytelling. Whimsical and silly is at its best when it’s intertwined with something serious and dark, and visa versa. Bringing life to the NPCs around your party is one of the delights of running these games. Expect a good mix of roleplay and social encounters alongside the combat and environmental challenges. As a DM I very much enjoy seeing what happens when the PCs get one up on the adventure as planned. Real character agency is why we aren't just playing a video game. My games are sandbox style. There are plot threads hanging all around, too many to chase them all. But a sandbox with no one playing in it is boring. The threads are just the start. Once the players get ahold of them that is when we start weaving a tapestry of story together. Though I build a detailed world, this isn’t the story about the world, this is a story about what your party of would be heroes or villains do with the opportunities you find in the world.

I deal with rules issues by...

Trying to adhere to the rules as written, there's some room for intention and occasional handwaving to speed up gameplay or increase fun. However, on the whole the easiest is to check the rules and follow them.

My favorite trope is...

A dragon in disguise as a person. Always a favorite. Rest assured, somewhere in any of my games there is probably a dragon waiting to be discovered while he or she goes about their weekly library visit

When it comes to voices

I'm always eager to try out a little silly voice and particularly when playing online it makes it really easy to immerse into the voice acting side of the character work for me

Steve's ideal table

The game can really be broken up into two parts. Table Top and Role Playing. I'm a big fan of the Table Top aspect, a good crunchy combat where someone pulls an ace counterspell at the right time just hits the action itch. I stick to the mechanics as best I can so they can become second nature and seamless to the gameplay. That way we can have fun with the Role Playing aspect. Because I play through Foundry my game is great for people who engage visually. I have a focus on creating large detailed maps and offering sandbox style exploration. I welcome questions and players who are inquisitive and curious will do well at my table. The same goes for exploring the game through the game engine. I aim to make the maps as interactive as possible. For this game I am looking for players who are interested in a tropical sailing and island hopping aesthetic. People willing to lean into the energy and reinforce it with their own character choices. I'm excited about some level of reflavoring. If want to customize the aesthetic and descriptive properties of your character's magic or abilities I will be glad to work with you to make your character idea work. As long as we stay in the mechanics of the game rules there is no reason your Tiefling might not have golden scales or call themselves something different.

I love it when a player

Gets to use their character's abilities. I know you picked them out with care, hoping the right circumstance would come up. I try to make a variety of challenges so everyone's niche can eventually shine. Let the Ranger track, the Paladin faith heal, and the Rogue steal stuff.

My perfect party mix is

Unbalanced. I don’t think a great party needs to be a healer/tank/dps like this is World of Warcraft. A party of warlocks or just fighters/monks is just a different way to adventure and solve problems. The most important mix is between those who wanna take notes, and those who make hazardous choices
