About Riley

šŸ³ļøā€āš§ļøšŸ³ļøā€šŸŒˆ Hey, y’all, I’m Riley! I’ve been playing-running-living-breathing TTRPGs for the last decade and telling stories for about thrice as long. Since late 2020, I have run weekly online sessions using a combination of D&D Beyond and Discord; in that time, my players have traversed the planes and prevailed over the multiverse’s most dastardly monsters, including obsessive vampires, megalomaniac wizards, and fanatic mind flayers. At my table, I strive to create a welcoming, collaborative, inclusive space that anyone can join. Whether you’ve been around since the OG ā€˜74 box set or just picked up the Basic Rules today, I have a place for you! I currently run both the 2014 and 2024 versions of D&D 5e (but I really hope to learn the ropes of Starfinder 2e sooner rather than later!). I am equally comfortable running one shots and longer campaigns, though I prefer to stick to officially published content at this time. Don’t think that means you’re getting something cookie cutter, though! I heavily doctor all of my games to fit both players’ wants and characters’ backstories, motivations, and actions.

I got started GMing...

More or less because nobody else wanted to! Just kidding. I was invited to a table by a good friend way back when, and while I loved playing, I was itching to give DMing a shot within just a few sessions. It helps that I’m a rules and numbers nerd!

My favorite books are

I’m a pretty eclectic reader, but some recent favorites include I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman, The Lamb by Lucy Rose, Model Home by Rivers Solomon, and In Tongues by Thomas Grattan. I like queer literary fiction, horror, and books that make me think!

How Riley runs games

✦ Rich, multilayered narrative committed to fully including you and your character ✦ Healthy, varied mix of roleplay, combat, and other encounters, allowing each party member to shine ✦ Thoughtfully roleplayed NPCs with quirks, wants, flaws, and motivations of their own ✦ Rules that are important and respected but can (sometimes) be broken ✦ Acceptance for everything but hate: BIPOC, LGBTQ+, neurodiverse, and disabled players are all welcome!

I once ran a session...

Picture this: you’re level 18, and you’ve spent months trekking through a zombie-infested jungle in hopes of saving your loved ones and the world. You’re in the very last dungeon and haven’t seen sunlight in days. You round a corner into the path of 3 (!) huge, slobbering beholders. Roll initiative.

I think min/maxing...

Can be fun… within reason! I’m guilty of optimizing my characters some, as I think many of us are, but when it’s at the expense of other players’ fun or relies on broken homebrew or stretching the rules, I tend to nip it in the bud.
