About Alucard The Spy (Colin)

I've been playing D&D 5e since I got into college. Started off with a more lackadaisical story and DM just to get used to the idea, then had several actual campaigns where got used to the actual rules. Unfortunately, most of them ended after a year or so do to scheduling conflicts, but I made good friends in the hobby both in person and online. After a few years as a player, I gave a try at DMing, I even DMed a full campaign for my sister and her friends over the span of 2 years. Other campaigns unfortunately fizzled out overtime due to scheduling conflicts. I think of myself as a 'fun but fare' DM. I believe in the rule of cool, and think that, the most important aspect isn't the story, it's about having fun.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Building D&D characters I'll probably never get to use beyond NPCs. By writing backstories for these characters I've gotten to know more about the lore of the forgotten realms.

How Alucard The Spy (Colin) runs games

I focus more on Roleplay. Now, while I'm not overly focused on combat, that doesn't mean I'm not ready to roll with it if it comes to that. I prefer Milestone levelling to XP levelling. I also like incorporating rule of cool at times, but remember, if you can do it, the enemy can as well.

I prep by

I prepare just enough to keep the game moving and consistent, but not so much that I put anyone on rails. If the party decides they want to do something I haven't planned for, I can roll with the change, though sometimes I need to call a short break to cover the new direction.

Alucard The Spy (Colin)'s ideal table

I think as long as you can have vibe with the rest of the table, I can vibe with you. I love creative thinking, like if the players can think of a way around an obstacle that I hadn't thought of.

I think it's a red flag when players...

Exhibits the following: Main Character Syndrome Rules Lawyering Can't separate the game from life. Look, D&D is a game, it's meant to be fun, challenging, with ups and downs, and everyone is here to have fun.

I think metagaming...

Is an unfortunate inevitability. Look, you play D&D for long enough as a player or a DM you're just going to know things about the system/world that your character shouldn't. That being said, sometimes I'll change up stuff to keep things a mystery.

I think min/maxing...

I mean, it's your character, build them how you want. If you want to min/max go right ahead, just be prepared if I have to adjust combat to keep it challenging.
