About Philip Lindsey
I've been DM-ing for about 10 years now. I've run campaigns and one-shots mostly in 3.5e and 5e for drunk college friends, long distance covid-era households, aspiring doctors, SF activist locals, kids in comic stores, and nieces in Spain. I host in-person games in my tricked out garage in foggy SF, I'm trying to expand my knowledge of TTRPG games, and I want to practice what I love with the larger online community. I've got 5 years of improv in Chicago under my belt and a knack for storytelling. I'm a published author and my book, Alone in Bad Company, was featured in Santa Cruz's Festival of Monsters 2025.

I became a GM because
I believe roleplaying creates agency in a time when we are increasingly pushed to be spectators and consumers. This game unlocks tools and skills that can be applied to real life in a wondrously positive way. This is a tool for liberation; played in prisons and the world over.
My favorite books are
The Book of Fantasy The Word for the World is Forest The Adventures and Misadventures of Maqroll
When I'm not running games I'm...
printing and developing film at the Harvey Milk Center, reading (or gazing longingly at) Ursula LeGuin or Borges novels. Diving into waves, backpacking in the wild, and saying hi to my neighbors.
How Philip Lindsey runs games
Rules are the structure, but the engine runs on unleaded improvisation and heart. The worlds we create are open sandbox and reactive to your choices. I borrow from "official" D&D lore, but expect a lot of surprises. This isn't for Tolkien purists, orcs can be the good guys here! Nothing happens in a vacuum and all my NPCs have arcs. Combat is gritty and tactical. Terrain maps share time with theater of the mind depending on circumstances. My players joke that I always say, "Watch out, I hear these guys are really strategic" before any encounter. "The Monsters Know What They're Doing" is foundational reading for me.
Philip Lindsey's ideal table
My goal is to make offers and react to your choices. The world is as fluid as you are, so expect NPCs to evolve and change as much as you. Players who like to roleplay will find a fun lively space here. Combat folks will enjoy the drama
