About Joseph Agnew
Hey all, I've been running 5e for six years and have recently been expanding into various systems like Blades In the Dark and Bladerunner. I like to run immersion and emotionally poignant campaigns with a lot of themes and genres. My players describe my style as "Anime adjacent" due to the pacing and over the top descriptions of combat encounters.

I got started GMing...
To provide a game for my friends who were interested in TTRPGs. I'd had a little bit of time as a player, maybe 20 sessions total in pathfinder, but started DMing 5e in early 2020.
The three words my players would use to describe me are...
Creative, Attentive, Invested.
When I'm not running games I'm...
currently learning visual storytelling by consuming a lot of movies and TV shows that have unique, important, or effective visual communication. Due to the impact of cinematography on TTRPGs it just makes sense to learn it so I can do it well.
How Joseph Agnew runs games
According to my players my style is very "anime." I prefer the main thrusts of the plot of any campaign to be tied to one or more PCs, I have a slightly faster overall pace than seems to be average, heavy customization, and over the top descriptions in combat or due to a Nat20 in critical moments. I prefer players to have a clear idea for their character and an attachment to said character when not running a meat grinder (which I seldom do) or one shot.

I prep by
looking at the trajectories of the characters and party as a whole. Those trends allow me to create a short list of where they might go and what they might do allowing me to aggregate images, statblocks, and other information I might need just in case.
Joseph Agnew's ideal table
My tables tend to be a little more on the intense side due to the styles of my current players. Combat is tuned a little higher than base RAW, custom abilities and creatures, as well as complications in most encounters. Social and Exploration facets of the game are always rewarding, always risky, but ultimately seem to please everyone that I've run for. I prioritize players who are locked in to their character, take them seriously, even if they're not a serious character. Any player that wants to really feel rewarded for making choices and engaging with the world and the mechanics of the game will find a very fun and engaging table with me.

I love it when a player
locks in to their character to a point of raw emotion. The rising tension, emotion, and adrenaline in situations of import really sparks joy in me as I am running the game for the players, and it's not something that can be faked.
