About Alex
Howdy, I'm Alex, a thirty-something IT professional from the UK with an overabundance of ideas and a dearth of good outlets to share them with people, so I'm getting into the online tabletop scene. I have been playing tabletop games since probably 2005, starting with good ol' 3.5 edition Dungeons & Dragons. I knew early that someday I wanted to be the guy behind the screen throwing the dice and narrating what happened, and around 2014/2015 I started trying it. In the ten years since, I've GM'd multiple campaigns in-person and online, dipped my toes into various systems, and spent an inordinate amount of time homebrewing content and original rules & minigames to wedge into my games.

People are always surprised when I tell them
"Yeah, I think you can do that." I like encouraging players to use creative or unexpected ways to solve a problem or complete a puzzle or bring a swift end to conflict, but they don't always have to involve dice. Sometimes, a decisive action by somebody who knows what they're doing just works.
How Alex runs games
Some touchstones for getting in sync with my vibe at the table would be Dishonored, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, The Lies of Locke Lamora, Sam & Max, X-Men '97, and the entire Discworld franchise. Terry Pratchett was my favourite author; as a result my games trend towards tongue-in-cheek high fantasy and gentler low fantasy with plenty of sword, sorcery and maybe a little science. I enjoy both the roleplaying aspects and the tactical aspects of D&D, and the same goes for other systems (where appropriate). I don't expect players to defer to my every whim about how a game should progress; I tailor my games around what my players would like to encounter, and do my best to create a world they will enjoy exploring, questing and battling across.

I am for a vibe that's...
evocative of the Discworld - a silly world that takes itself seriously, being explored by a self-aware party who's ready to deliver and receive some social commentary and jokes yet also ready to leap into the fray when conflict arises
I love it when a player
- is excited to try something original or new - picks things that are "under-optimal" - responds to NPC hostility with wisecracking or attempts to parley - uses spells and items in ways that were not intended - plays tactfully and thoughtfully, considering the world - says "great session, thanks!"
I think min/maxing...
has a place at the table if it brings a player joy to try out a "new build" they've come up with or seen others use. Not everybody has to make a perfect character; I can easily work with a party of paragons, all-rounders and flawed imperfect individuals, and I prefer there to be a chance of failure.
