About Joshua Hitz (BasilStrikes)

I love ttrpgs and i love how you can bring strangers together to enjoy a second life. Make them writers, gamers and thespians all at once through this awesome hobby. My goal when i run games is to offer Adventure to different strange and wonderful lands, Creative and thoughtful combat scenes where rules assist the narrative, not ride against it and Life sim events and choices to allow the players to get invested in the narrative at their preferred paced. My go to system is Cypher, as it is setting free with dice mechanics i find allow for a lot of creative and mechanical thinking you don't always see in this space. Plus, being able to play a magic samurai and a techno cowboy in the same campaign, is just awesome.

I got started GMing...

Mostly because i loved the idea of playing a game and telling a story with live theater play antics. Ive learned alot about what it takes to be a good GM and a good person, so I feel im at a point where i can really shine for you all and still grow in so many ways.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Creative, Silly, Loud

When I'm not running games I'm...

Relaxing with some ff14/playing an indie game i bought 3 years ago...and never got around to finishing. Beyond that i play with my dogs and make stupid jokes with my wife.

How Joshua Hitz (BasilStrikes) runs games

Roleplay and Gameplay are made to coexist. Not to where you lose track of one or the other, but you naturally can jump between the story and the game with little to no effort. To do this, i like to focus on giving my players choices on arcs/adventures to go on for the first few sessions, until the players of established ties with npcs, and goals in their current community, then shifting focus to the individual dramas of the pcs fantasy lives. I also am big on rewarding my players after adventures. You wont need to worry about getting nothing for going on big adventures, I have lots of quick references and tools to help me gauge how much you guys should be rewarded per level and you'll always be able to expand your characters wants and needs in fair but satisfying degrees

I prep by

Reading lots of my setting books and genres books both third party and direct Cypher Products. Love using alot of Pathfinder story books for ideas and worlds.

Rules are...

Guidelines Especially in games like Cypher or Savage Worlds. RPG like these don't need to be balanced in a sense of everyone being the same, but instead, that everyone has just as much chance to shine the way they want WITHOUT pulling the rug out from under the challenge without teamwork

When it comes to voices

I rely more on tone, cadence and inflection over accent. With all do respect im a midwestern white guy, and im not about to do bad African or Asian accents with non white npcs. Ill give funny voices sure, but the funny is how deep or high i speak or in what these wonderful characters say

Joshua Hitz (BasilStrikes)'s ideal table

Cooperation. This is a hobby that majorly is created with the idea to work together. My preference at the table is not to come in expecting I or any of your fellow players to convince you to engage. Take the step, speak up and ask or suggest ideas during either character creation or during events in the game. My job is to supply great platforms for you to feel comfortable engaging, but beyond the space and some advise, i need players to WANT to adventure and make friends. Respect each other, be willing to be wrong AND stand up for yourself all while offering understanding, NOT prove your right and someone else is wrong.

I love it when a player

Throws curve balls at me or asks questions about the setting/context of their adventure. Im always happy when a player inputs something into a scene i didnt consider, and we roll on it to see if its in play.

I think metagaming...

In cypher and nimble or other games as, is fine. Its a paradigm shift that encourages players to actively work together. Even outside of my preferred game, meta gaming is fine and i think allows for a better blend of the story and mechanics than people think.

My table is not the place for...

Bigotry and closed mindedness. "But an elf/dwarf/halfling would do this/wouldn't do that/would or wouldn't look like that" HAVE AN IMAGINATION
