About Gautham

Welcome! I'm an experienced game master with lots of experience running fun, supportive games using Foundry Virtual Tabletop and Discord. I've been playing and running roleplaying games for about 30 years, since I was a teenager, and I'm still learning, improving and always striving to be a better game master. I started playing with Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition, and have played and game mastered in all the editions since, through 3rd Edition, 4th Edition, and now 5th Edition. I've also played a variety of different games and systems, and currently, aside from D&D 5e. I really enjoy a range of Powered by the Apocalypse games, including Blades in the Dark, Dungeon World, Freebooters on the Frontier, Apocalypse World, and more. I enjoy OSR games too, like Cairn 2e, FIST, and Liminal Horror. This is a hobby I truly love, and it's something I love to contribute to as a game master. I love the experience of imagining worlds together, weaving a heroic or gritty story together from the adventures we have together at the game table. As amazing as video games have become, they still can't quite match the feeling of immersion and freedom you can achieve in a roleplaying game, when everything's going right. When a player tells me that the last session I ran for them was so exciting they had a hard time getting to sleep, I know I did my job.

How Gautham runs games

When I'm GMing D&D, I like to provide my players a solid mix of chances for roleplaying (interacting with the world and with the characters in it) and for exciting combat. Even in games that are more focused than a "sandbox" style of gameplay, I strive to give players a chance to come up with and pursue their own goals for their characters and give them opportunities to develop their characters through play and interaction. In non-D&D games, like Blades in the Dark, I enjoy amping up the social and interactive aspects of roleplaying, like developing intrigue and interaction between different game factions. In any style of game I play, I welcome and thrive on creative collaboration with my players, where they can bring their own ideas and creativity to the game and we can integrate them into the game world together. I love when my players are inventive and creative, and I get the opportunity to stay flexible and try and figure out quickly what the result of their actions might be. I also love when my players get into connecting with the lore and exploring the details of the setting, and rewarding that.
