About Goatnik

Hello to anyone reading this. My name is Goatnik, and I'm looking to be your next Dungeon Master. I've been playing Dungeons & Dragons for about 12 years now, and I feel I have a very solid understanding of how the game works, both on the table and for the players. My main experience is with 5E, but I have also played and run games in 3.5, Pathfinder, World of Warcraft: The Roleplaying Game and Star Wars: Saga Edition. While I am not opposed to WotC's modules, I prefer to modify them in interesting ways or just a full-blown homebrew campaign. One of my favorite examples of this is my Curse of Strahd rewrite. Rather than how it is written in the book, I opted to place Barovia and all it's supernatural goodness into the state of West Virginia in the year 1999. This gave the module a Goosebumps/Stranger Things-esque feeling to it, allowing my players to still be fantastical heroes while subverting the standard tabletop tropes by having them use football equipment and average household tools as weapons. To this day it is my favorite module re-skin I've ever done, and I'm definitely interested in doing more like it. It may sound a bit cliche, but my main goal with being a DM is to provide a fun and enjoyable game that any player can enjoy. If you are interested in having me as your DM, feel free to send me a message at any time. I'm always willing to meet new people and talk about new games. Talk to you soon!

I became a GM because

I've always loved the art of storytelling. While playing D&D is a lot of fun, I get the most enjoyment when I'm telling a story for and with my friends.

I got started GMing...

The same way I think a lot of people got started: my friend group wanted to play D&D but no one had any experience DMing. I volunteered to learn how to do it and I've never regretted that choice.

My favorite system of all Time is

D&D 3.5. It's the system I started on and after playing various systems over the years, I still think it's the most enjoyable even if its not the easiest to learn. Honorable Mention: World of Warcraft: The Roleplaying Game. It's just like 3.5 but for WoW.

How Goatnik runs games

D&D is all about balance. You need good characters to make the action feel earned, and you need good action to give the characters and world a sense of depth. Additionally, rules are important to the game, but are not iron-clad. I strive to excel in all fields, to provide an open feeling where all my players are free to roleplay as they wish, while also providing visceral and life-threatening combat. I strive to create a game that uses the framework of any system I'm using, but allows for maneuverability in terms of player enjoyment and dynamics. I use Foundry as my online tabletop platform, and I use VoiceMod to simulate different voices for various creatures and people.

I deal with rules issues by...

Using logic and reading the table. While I believe that games require rules in order to function, I will always advocate for the "Rule of Cool" in situations where the standard rules fail.

My games focus on...

Creating an enjoyable and immersive world for my players to help me unfold.

When it comes to voices

I enjoy having different voices for most NPCs. I try to avoid doing accents since I'm frankly terrible at them, but I believe I have a vocal range that can cover most situations. In those situations that I can't do myself, or if I feel it's necessary for the story, I like to use VoiceMod.
