About the adventure

This is a relatively simple adventure, aimed at new or returning players from earlier editions to the game, but players of all skill levels are welcome to join. On this mini campaign, you must restore order to Cinderwood City, by using your investigative skills to track down the elusive goblin encampment that resides somewhere in Elderwood Forest. This campaign will take players from level one, until approximately level 5 or 6, depending on how in depth players choose to get. In this game, I as the DM will guide you on how to play the ever so magical game of Dungeons and Dragons. The game will be played through the use of Tabletop Simulator (available on STEAM) as well as Discord. Provided in the game are fully 3 dimensional battle maps, with battle music, and other visual effects to set the mood. Players are encouraged to get Tabletop Simulator, but are not required! Each running of the campaign will include a session 0 for absolutely zero cost to the player. This session will explain the rules for the table, expectation of players and an explanation of how I like to run games. Additionally, as a gesture of good will, I will also include the first session of the game for free.

About me

Hello, and thank you for your consideration! My name is Kellen; I'm a 33 year old male from Canada who has recently become swept up in the renaissance of D&D. My intro to D&D was Baldur's Gate 3, and then playing in a close friends campaign. I was immediately hooked, and decided to start a campaign of my own. My homebrew campaign that I run for my friends is currently 6 months old, and approximately 100 hours worth of playtime. It is a high fantasy adventure, featuring cataclysmic stakes. I'm also working on a couple other smaller scale campaign ideas that I'm hoping to share with all of you here.

Character creation
Creating your character

As this campaign is meant as an "intro" to D&D 5e, the first session will be spent on assisting players with creating their characters. For returning players already familiar with this process, they're welcome to create a character of their choosing at their leisure. I am open and flexible when it comes to stat distribution. There are several common methods, and all are valid in my mind, it's really player preference. All players in this campaign will begin at level 1. Character creation will happen over Discord, and I will provide references to official Wizards of the Coast materials to aid in character creation, if the players do not already possess the guide books themselves.

What to expect
Preparing for the session

Players will be expected to have access to a Discord account, as well as being in possession of a properly working microphone. This is non-negotiable, as D&D is a highly communicative game, requiring players to be able to speak to one another is essential. Players will be encouraged, but not expected to purchase Tabletop Simulator, a game available on STEAM. Tabletop Simulator is how I run my games visually, as it adds another layer of immersivity to the campaign. If players do not wish to purchase the game (completely understandable) I, as DM can move your characters around as per your wishes, it will however slow down the pace of play.

What Kellen brings to the table

I absolutely try my best, but I'm definitely not a voice actor, so don't expect a lot from me in that regard! I try my best by providing immersive 3D maps using 3D assets, with battle music, and other effects to deliver a fun experience. I try to play the game as by the books as possible, but I'm willing to be swayed by a convincing argument... Ultimately, I try to lean toward the rule of cool, so long as it makes sense in the story.

Homebrew rules

I'm a new DM, and I don't really have a nailed down list of my own rules that I like to use, quite yet. I'm picking up a few here and there and trying to see what works.

Safety
How Kellen creates a safe table

I hold a session 0 to discuss possible story beats that may show up in my campaign. I do my best to get a general census of peoples tolerances for topics that may be perceived as "troublesome". Ultimately, I try to run games that may be more gritty, or realistic... Less "Disneyfied, so if this is an issue for you, this may not be the game for you.
