The Sunless Citadel 5e - Tales of the Yawning Portal
Dungeons & Dragons 5e on D&D Beyond, Discord, Owlbear Rodeo, Physical Battlemap, Theater of the Mind
About the adventure
Rumors of lost wealth said to be found in the sunken fortress, known by the locals of Oakhurst as the Sunless Citadel, have spread far across the corners of Faerun! The Sunless Citadel, located in the foothills northwest of Thundertree, is said to have once been a secret stronghold for the Cult of the Dragon, before it plunged into the earth when Mount Hotenow erupted and threw the region into turmoil. All the stories point to treasure, glory, and discovery. Recently you have heard mention of a magical fruit sometimes sold to the locals of Oakhurst by a goblin tribe infesting these strange ruins... Is there any truth to these legends? -- The Sunless Citadel is a classic adventure republished for 5e D&D in Tales of the Yawning Portal. This adventure, which I have set in the Forgotten Realms, is an excellent start for beginning players who are just getting familiar with the game and takes characters from 1st to 2nd or 3rd level. Sessions will be held over Discord, make use of a battle mat (non-digital) and physical 3-D printed miniatures. I grew up only needing pen, paper, and a few willing friends to play Dungeons and Dragons, and I still enjoy that experience online. I hope this provides a unique, immersive, and nostalgic experience for everyone involved. If you make use of D&D Beyond to track your character I welcome that, but I make use of the physical books whenever possible. -- Character creation will be Level 1 characters using official WotC 5e rulebooks and dice rolls for stats. I have no hard character creation guidelines but remember if you are using Ravnica, Theros, Wildemount, or Eberron character options additional guidance might be needed from your DM to immerse your character within the Forgotten Realms. XGtE & TGtE options are also available. PM directly for additional inquiries. -- I will not tolerate discrimination, harassment, or bullying of any kind at my table. We are all here for a taste of an escape from the real world, lets respect that and each other. Hard and soft role play limits will be discussed prior to the session and can be submitted anonymously to me directly here, or through private message on Discord. -- I hope to see you soon adventurers!
How to prepare
Webcam and mic are both necessary. Familiarity with the rules is welcome but not required. Character creation will be done during a "Session 0" hosted over Discord. Bring your dice, some snacks, and send me a copy of your character sheet. I make use of physical rulebooks, feel free to use digital options at your own preference.
What I provide
I grew up playing D&D with minimal means and I still enjoy the nostalgia this provides. I make use of a battle-mat, hand painted 3-D printed miniatures, and the occasional silly voice to emulate the experience that you would typically find if you were seated together around a table.
The Sunless Citadel is your classic dungeon delving "short run" module, taking the players from 1st to 2nd or 3rd level, with a good mix of adventure and intrigue. You will be involved in unravelling a mystery that has attracted a great deal of attention to Oakhurst, more than likely fight a few monsters, and hopefully claim the rumored lost wealth of the Sunless Citadel! If you have ever played this classic module before resist any spoilers for your fellow players. A Session 0 will be hosted on discord for character creation prior to Session 1. 5e Dungeons and Dragons ruleset. Forgotten Realms Setting. Sessions will be hosted once a week and last approximately 3 to 3.5 hours. There is a nice balance of exploration, roleplay, and combat involved in this module, making it the ideal starting point for newcomers and returning adventurers alike!
