About the adventure

A modern icon—Lost Mine of Phandelver from the D&D 5E Beginner Box, adapted to my homebrew setting of Orbis Leonis. A simple escort of supplies to the seaside town of Welltide leads to danger, intrigue, and a secret treasure that even the dwarves of Starhold will go to extremes to keep hidden. Terrific for learning tabletop roleplaying generally, D&D 5E specifically, or just recapturing that "when everything was new" feel! Use one of the pregenerated characters provided, or create a new hero of your own during the "session 0". This is archetypal D&D, giving equal emphasis to each of the "three pillars of adventure" (exploration, combat, and social encounters), taking characters from 1st level to somewhere between 3rd and 5th over the course of several sessions. The game will run on Sunday nights starting at 5 pm EST, with sessions running 3-4 hours. The estimated duration of the campaign is ten sessions, and if all goes well it will segue into a second campaign adapting the 3E classic "Red Hand of Doom."

How to prepare

You will need Discord, a decent microphone and web access, and a Roll20 account (which is free). A webcam is preferred (I like to see people's expressions/reactions during RP) but is not required.

What I provide

I will provide a link to the Roll20 campaign and a PDF with a brief background and the pregenerated characters to start.

Gameplay details

This game emphasizes heroic adventure and exploration in a high fantasy setting. There may be some political intrigue or deception by NPCs, and heroism is a risky business so character capture or death is a possibility. Although NPC interaction will be present and important, there will not be romantic elements unless initiated by players, and any of those must be agreed upon by everyone involved. When portraying NPCs, I speak "in character" most of the time; players are encouraged to respond the same way but are not required to do so. If you have never played a TTRPG or don't know the rules to 5E, that's fine! I'm happy to coach you through building your character and teaching you the basics of D&D and Roll20. Over time you will be expected to learn enough to manage your own character. The first session of the game will be a "Session 0" in which characters will be chosen or generated and "the party" will be created as a cohesive whole, during which any questions or concerns about content or safety tools will be discussed. There will also be at least one "bio break" per session, and players who wish to stop for a moment or step away are encouraged to say so.

How will character creation work

Character creation will take place during Session 0. Several pregenerated characters will be available to choose from, or you may create a new character. All characters (including replacements for slain or retired characters) begin at 1st level.

Players can expect

  • Combat/Tactics: Medium
  • Roleplay: High

  • Experience Level: Beginner
