About the adventure

⛩️⛩️⛩️ CAMPAIGN DESCRIPTION: ⛩️⛩️⛩️ It's July 1986. Japan's economy is booming, shoulder pads are in, and The King in Yellow's influence spreads. But you don't know that - not yet - as you head to Ikeruga, a town plagued by nightmares of a monster. You'll find more than one. Sutra of Pale Leaves explores 1980s Japanese with a novel take on the King in Yellow. Great for new and returning players. Presented over six scenarios and an epilogue. You can check out my spoiler-lite "after campaign" review for more information. LINK TO REIVIEW: https://golvin.substack.com/p/sutra-of-pale-leaves-coc-after-campaign?r=11s992 ⛩️⛩️⛩️ EXPECTATIONS & MECHANICS: ⛩️⛩️⛩️ Expect a fast-paced campaign with pre-made characters, handouts, maps, and art for an immersive and, more importantly, a smooth experience. Where combat isn't the only option. Borrowing from Pulp Cthulhu to increase investigator survival: 🔹Increased Luck Regeneration: Gain +1d10 at the end each scenario in addition to your improvement roll. 🔹Cheating Death: Investigators with 30+ Luck can spend all of it to avoid dying. Appearing in the next reasonable scene. 🔹Improved Healing: First Aid and Medicine restore 1d4 HP when used. While Sutra of Pales Leaves' Japanese setting heavily limits weapons (no firearms). And the King in Yellow introduces a Sanity alternative, Exposure, as they overwrite your Investigator's mind.

About me

Hi👋, I'm Franc, better known as Golvin. I'd like to be your GM. While I mainly run D&D, Call of Cthulhu, and Alien RPG, my real pleasure is trying new modules and systems. (Cowboy Bebop RPG anyone?) Which has led me to a specialization in running one-shots, often including highly detailed handouts, pre-made characters, and other player aids. I also write the Reviews from the Far Reams Substack newsletter, currently focused on helping others get the most out of Call of Cthulhu 7e modules.

Character creation

Creating your character

Use one of six pre-made characters built for Sutra of Pale Leaves or make your own. For those unfamiliar with Call of Cthulhu both the Discord and Roll20 game have a character creation guide that'll help you avoid common pitfalls. Dhole'sHouse.org, CoC's stripped down D&D Beyond equivalent, can also help. Whereas Roll20 CoC charactermancer should be avoid as it almost always produces errors. Investigators added mid-campaign, make an improvement roll for each scenario completed.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Sutra of Pale Leaves uses Discord (voice chat, gm notes) and Roll20 (character sheets, dice, etc.). To participate in the game, you will need to: ✅ A Roll20 account (free) ✅ A Discord account (free) ✅ Microphone. ✅ Headset or quiet space to avoid feedback. ☑️Camera (Optional.)

What Golvin - One-Shot GM brings to the table

As a GM, I bring with me: 🔹Maps, handouts, and art for clarity and a smoother experience. 🔹Memorable NPCs. 🔹Fast paced narratives. 🔹A decade of experience running and teaching TTRPGs. 🔹6 pre-made characters, so you can jump in immediately.

Homebrew rules

🔹Increased Luck Regeneration: Gain +1d10 at the end each scenario in addition to your improvement roll. 🔹Cheating Death: Investigators with 30+ Luck can spend all of it to avoid dying. Appearing in the next reasonable scene. 🔹Improved Healing: First Aid and Medicine restore 1d4 HP when used. 🔹Bespoke Insanity: I may offer or players may suggest bespoke consequences for insanity, overwriting those rolled. 🔹Exposure Points (EP): Exposure to the King in Yellow allows them to overwrite investigators, forcing a Power roll. Gaining 1 or 2 points on a failed or fumbled roll, respectively. Those who've accumulated 10 or more points become completely overwritten (NPC). While the King in Yellow can hinder (add penalty dice) or aid (at a cost) those with 1 or more EP.

Safety

How Golvin - One-Shot GM creates a safe table

I use the following default Lines (hard content boundaries) and Veil (can happen but not detailed) for player actions. Boiling down to "be respectful" and "don't be a creep/bloodthirsty." ❌Sexual content especially violence. (Line) ❌Torture and other acts of blatant cruelty/sadism. (Line) ❌Negatively impacting another player's character without their consent. (Line) ❌Gratuitous depictions of violence and/or gore. (Line) ❌Racism, bigotry, etc. Both fantastic and real. (Line) ✖️Romance (Veil. It hogs the spotlight.) At the beginning of the session, I'll check if anyone has additional Line or Veils to add. Likewise, I'll check in if I sense anything is off or if a player is quiet. That said, I'm human and miss things. If you're uncomfortable, please say something or send an X via discord's private chat (causing it to ping me). I'll stop, access, and make necessary changes.
