About the adventure

Welcome to "The Alchemy of DMing," a 90-minute interactive masterclass designed for Game Masters who want to elevate their table experience. Running a pre-written module exactly as written often makes players feel like tourists in a rigid world. In this workshop, you'll learn how to treat the module purely as a skeletal structure, using your players' histories, choices, and psychology as the living muscle that drives the narrative forward. We will cover core philosophies like the "Chameleon GM" style—knowing exactly when to step back for high-roleplay scenes and when to step up as a precise, empowering facilitator for high-stakes tactical combat. You'll discover how to seamlessly weave player backstories into existing module NPCs, ensuring their characters' personal traumas and motivations anchor them to the world. We'll also cover how to extract behavioral anchors during Session 0, moving past generic alignment questions to find out how your players actually make moral decisions. Beyond narrative, we’ll dive into the practical toolkit: resolving complicated social scenes without stalling the drama, maintaining table momentum, and building a thriving out-of-game community using the "Bhaal Token" journal economy to reward player engagement. Whether you're a brand new DM looking for a solid foundation or a veteran seeking to prevent table stalls and boost player investment, you'll leave this session with actionable strategies to make your next campaign unforgettable.

About me

Born and raised in Cape Town, I am a professional Dungeon Master and TTRPG writer dedicated to the art of collaborative, high-stakes storytelling. My life has been a long journey from a young adventurer in the Forgotten Realms to a full-time professional creator who believes that D&D is the ultimate form of community therapy. Drawing on my background as a Creative Manager and senior designer, I bring a professional design eye to the virtual tabletop and my worldbuilding, treating every session not just as a game, but as an immersive production. I am a lifelong storyteller who believes that the "Transmutation Rule"—Never say "No"—say "Yes, and here are the consequences"—is the key to unlocking a campaign that stays with you long after the session ends. I am deeply committed to a trauma-informed, inclusive table. I prioritise community over anonymity, fostering a space where 2SLGBTQIA+, BIPOC, and neurodivergent adventurers can find a home. When you join my table, you aren't just a player—you are a contributor to a living, breathing world. What My Players Say “I was beyond spoiled having Calvin as a DM. His infectious personality, encyclopedia of NPC voices, and deep care for the game and his players is evident in every session.” “Every arc and cliffhanger is an emotional rollercoaster; Calvin is the definition of collaborative and is very diligent in making sure players feel safe.” “A needlepoint balance of everything—collaborative, creative, and permissive.”

Character creation

Creating your character

No character creation is required for this session! Since this is a Game Master workshop and masterclass, you only need to bring yourself, a notebook, and your burning DM questions. We will be analyzing scenarios, discussing module adaptation, and going over DMing philosophies rather than rolling stats or building heroes.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will need a free Discord account and a working microphone, as the workshop will be hosted via a private Discord voice channel. You do not need any specific virtual tabletop accounts to participate—we will focus on universal techniques that apply whether you play digitally or purely theater of the mind. Come prepared with a specific module or campaign idea you are currently running or planning to run, as we will use real examples during the Q&A!

What Calvin brings to the table

I will provide a comprehensive, structured masterclass complete with visual aids, real-world case studies from my own campaigns, and an open floor for Q&A. You will receive a breakdown of my "Psychological Extraction" framework to use with your own players, as well as templates for integrating the "Bhaal Token" economy to reward out-of-game journaling. I bring a highly energetic, welcoming, and community-focused atmosphere to ensure everyone feels comfortable sharing their GMing hurdles, asking questions, and collaborating on ideas.

Safety

How Calvin creates a safe table

Creating a safe and welcoming space is a top priority, even in a workshop setting. I operate on the principle of "Community Over Anonymity," ensuring our Discord space is respectful, inclusive, and constructive for all attendees to learn and grow. We will utilize the Open Door policy, meaning you can step away from the workshop at any time if needed, no questions asked. There will be a dedicated time for Debriefing at the end of the session to ensure everyone leaves with their questions answered and feeling inspired.
